Considering the circumstances I guess this was an ok race.  If only I could turn back time to January.  My fitness is fine but the legs are just not road tested enough to expect to run what I think I capable of.   I went out with the leaders at around a 5 to 5:10 pace but immediately after we started the downhill on 23rd I knew that my legs weren't there.  Between miles 4 and 5 I was passed by Riley Cook, Steve, Walter and then another guy passed me at around mile 9.  The last 3 miles felt like miles 21 to 24 in a marathon which means I will gimping around for the next few days.  I wore my training shoes instead of flats to help my foot but I am still concerned that it isn't completely healed.  I will do my best not to run for a week and if it still hurts after that I will be forced to buy a pass to a pool, dust off my fins and suit, and unretire from triathlon training.  I also have a new mountain bike that is waiting to be ridden.  If I am lucky I will break my collarbone for the 3rd time so my foot will have time to heal.

Congrats to Walter and Steve for kicking my trash and to Allie for WINNING the race.

Correction: I have already broken my collarbone 3 times.  Next time will be the 4th.  Left side needs a break to even it out.

You are awesome, Fritz!

All things considered you did great. Injuries just plain stink.

Seriously ... most people would be heaven with a time like you got today!

Hi ya. Your half time today is awesome!

I hope your foot is okay!

You seem to be injured quite often, no? Am I wrong? I was just injured (for the first time ever) in Jan and Feb. I WENT NUTS! I don't know how you deal with it!

nice job today, frtiz. i think it's a good result considering you have been confined to mostly cross training for the past few months. i really hope your foot stops giving you trouble and can heal up for good.

I doubt it will be very long before you kick our butts again! I'm really missing the triathlon circuit with all this running lately. I'd say go for it. Check out Blacktail, in Idaho Falls. That's a fun course.

Nice job running strong and achieving a great time on the training you have been able to put in. You rocked it and will continue to improve as you get back to it.

Good race considering you've been on the elliptical since basically the STG half in January. Hope you get healthy for Ogden.

At least mountain biking is more fun than the stair climber!

Great job in the race. You are one tough dude.

Fritz, you did fine especially considering the injury. I was amazed that you ran that well with it!

Thanks for all the comments and words of encouragement.

Lily, yes, I have been injured quite a bit over the last year. IT band injury from June to Sept last year and now this foot injury that started at the end of January. However, with the exception of a few hamstring issues, I was basically running injury free from age 20 through age 27. I used to swim a lot back then so maybe I need to mix that in again.

It is definitely very frustrating dealing with it but at least it will go away (if I can be patient) and it isn't anything chronic. To add some perspective, in 2007 and 2008 there were 2, 6 month periods where I couldn't seriously train at all because of cancer treatment (surgeries and chemo) and I promise during those times running again wasn't my main concern. Now I guess a few months doesn't seem like the end of the world, although it still sucks.

My sister is one who really has the right to complain although she never does. She was an amazing swimmer and runner at Brighton High School but then suffered a major accident when she was 22 and since then (10 years ago) she hasn't been able to run and still has a hard time walking for long periods. It's sad because she could have dominated triathlons. Despite this she has still found a way to have a successful career in the local cycling circuit. And since she can’t run, when we go on trips she always gets to bring her bike in a box.

So....does being injured drive me nuts? Yes, probably a lot more than most people. But as cliche as it may sound, it could be a lot worse. :)

Well I really love your perspective. I wish that a couple months ago I would have had a better attitude about being injured, it would have saved me a lot of heartache.

My feet are currently hurting me as well. Both. I am not sure why, I'm thinking I need to hit up the dr. before it becomes a full blown injury. Because right now, I am able to run, and they don't hurt. It's afterwards...

How did you feel about the half course yesterday? I kinda want to do this one next year.

From Fritz on Sun, Apr 17, 2011 at 22:46:19 from 67.182.226.25

I like the course. It has a good amount of downhill but isn't straight down.

I am not the one to ask for medical advice but I do think it's a good idea to see a Dr. if it is getting worse. Good luck.

Great race despite the challenges that you have been facing lately. You have broken the collarbone 3 times? That is insane. Fragile bones...

Happy Easter, Fritz! :)
