Fritz- thanks for your comment on my blog. When you had your hip problem- what was wrong with your hips? What was the recovery time?

From Fritz on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 11:24:07 from 65.116.116.6

Jon, I just replied to your blog. What was weird is that I couldn't run at all for a few weeks yet the doctors couldn't really tell what was wrong. I think one hip was just really weak and I was putting too much strain on the other side. It took about 1.5 months to get back to normal but with more focused physical therapy I am sure that could be faster.

From Jon on Fri, Jan 08, 2010 at 12:47:47 from 138.64.8.51

Thanks. I've only got 4 weeks, but hopefully I can struggle through the 100 without too much pain or doing any permanent damage.

16 miles at 6:41 pace.  Ran from 30 south to 11th ave and back down 15 east.  I stopped at the gym to put in a couple of miles on the treadmill but it was packed.  Probably smarter people than me considering I just lost a weak of my life due to running in this crap.

I am happy to get over 60 miles again.  It's funny that 60 is nothing compared to many people on this blog yet putting in consecutive 60 miles a week at this time of the year is by far the most I have ever run.  I am sure that will be changing as I plan to run some 50s and 100s.

My fingers are crossed that the inversion goes away soon.

My fingers are crossed for that clean air as well. We canceled our errands today just so we didn't have to drive around contributing to this "soup".

I agree about the cumulative mileage. It is also funny what people notice on the blog. There are certain markers that get you a lot of attention, i.e. my two 80s in a row. The truth of the matter is I've just stayed to plan increasing about 5 mi/wk at each month change. I just want to get about 100 mi more for the 18wk leading up to SLC as I did last time.

I will credit this win (first ever 5k win) to whoever locked Dennis Simonaitis' keys in his car.  Don't quote me on it  but apparently something he needed for the race was locked in his car so he couldn't race.  I guess the running Gods were on my side today.

The Race:

I took off out of the gate in the lead and held it to about the first mile mark.  First split was about 5:10.  At that point a young kid, possibly in his late teens or early 20's, caught up but didn't pull away and Albert wasn't far behind.  I ran beside or slightly behind the young kid from mile 1 and through the turn around.  Mile 2 split was slightly slower at about 5:20.  The turn around probably slowed us a bit and I was trying to conserve energy for the finish.  At the 2 mile mark we were still side by side and for the next 3/4 mile he put in a few small surges.  Fortunately they weren't big surges and I was able to stay within a few feet.  By mile 2.75 I knew I had a shot so then I just had to figure out how long I should or could wait to put in a surge.  I figured by mile 2.9 it was now or never so I kicked as much as I could and to my surprise the young kid didn't follow.  I was obviously happy with the result considering the weather and the fact that the season just started.  After reviewing past 5ks, which I don't run a lot, I discovered that this might actually be a PR for an honest 5k course; my previous best was a 16:23 run at the Heart of Holladay in 2001.  My excuse for not improving my 5ks has been and will continue to be that they I don't care enough and they HURT! :)

Great race and time! Nice way to start off the year with a fast 5K win!

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 18:18:02 from 192.168.1.1

Congratulations on a 5 K PR. I think this was an honest win. Dennis has been getting slower, he probably could have run 16:25, but not 16:14. Very solid kick, shows you have some serious potential. I'll look at your training in more detail when I have a chance and will post some ideas.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 18:36:03 from 192.168.1.1

After looking at the graph of your mileage for the end of 2008 and the entire year 2009 I think I understood something. If 250 miles a month with occasional drops to 150 is enough of an aerobic stimulus for you to run PRs in all distances 5 K through the marathon, most likely you are still not fully developed aerobically. Which is exciting because that suggests sub-2:19 is within the realm of possibility without having to do anything unknown to science.

What I would do is make sure you never run less than 10 miles on any single day (except one day of rest per week). Slow the pace down if you have to. Occasionally run fast so you will not forget, and when you do, do not go slower than 5:40. If you cannot go 5:40 or if you are done with sub-5:40 for the day, do not break 7:00 for the rest of the run. If you start itching to run 6:30s, speed up all the way to 5:40 or faster until you are tired.

If my guess is correct and this is indeed a step in the right direction, you will be in sub-1:10 honest course half shape around May/June, 5 K will probably drop to 15:40, 10 K around 32:30.

From Fritz on Tue, Feb 02, 2010 at 23:00:49 from 97.117.46.214

Thanks Sasha. I have always known the I need more focus with my training. In my early 20's I was extremely disciplined with triathlon training and I didn't like where I ended up. Of course I am older and wiser now so I think a more focused approach could be manageable.

I finally was able to do 500 floors in an hour on the stair master.  The machine says that is 10.5 miles but that seems crazy because that is faster than a 6 min/mile pace.  The effort however, is more than a 6 min pace so I am giving myself the credit. :)  5 miles easy after the stair master.  I probably lost 5 - 10 lbs in sweat.

This race wasn't as interesting or close as the last but I didn't mind because the result was the same. There was a big tail wind going out which explains the fast 5k but as the 4-6 splits show, I was SLOW coming back.  Another factor for the slow return was that I probably went out a little too fast.  The strategy must have worked however, because I dropped my closest competitor (same young guy from 2 weeks ago) at mile 1, and didn't see him for the rest of the race.  I think I finished a couple of minutes ahead.

After my warm up I wasn't sure how I would feel.  I think the pre race coffee was a bad idea.  I wanted to run 17, 17 and then possibly negative split the last 5k.  I was on target after the first 5k but I started fading a bit at the half way point.  At that point I was caught by Jamal (17 year old runner from Cyprus High) but I was only able to stick with him for a half mile.  I think the middle 5k was more like 18 and then I might have finished in 17.  Ok race given that I didn't feel great.

Last year I felt amazing and I was only 20 seconds faster.  This tells me that I am improving.  I will check my splits later.

Nice job, Fritz. It's always an interesting experience to compare times to last year, especially when your race last year was excellent. Sounds like a successful race today that sets you up nicely for the rest of the year.

Despite the wind it was a beautiful day. You mentioned a black hole in your training. Well if it makes you feel any better I haven't really been able to run since 3/9 because of a strained hamstring, hence all the cross training/biking. Aren't hamstrings the dumbest? I was planning to run the Riverton Half but I doubt it's feasible at this point.

Good luck getting back into your routine. You did have quite the stretch for awhile. If there is a miracle I will see you in Riverton.

With the SLC Marathon looming I knew I had to get over this nagging hamstring issue and put in some long runs.  Today was my attempt at that.  I started on 9th E. and went straight up 33rd S. to Wasatch Blvd.  Since I was feeling ok I took a right turn instead of a left and headed South on Wasatch.  I wanted to get in 20 miles so I continued on to 7 Eleven.  At that point I knew I would get my 20 miles because I had 10 miles left.  The question then became, would I be walking, calling for a ride, or be able to run it in?  At the turn around my legs were heavy and my muscles were sore but they didn't seem to be getting much worse.  There were even moments at mile 15 or so that I was feeling kind of fast.  I ended up making it back in negative split (because of the slow 5 miles up 33rd) and I don't think there is any permanent damage.   I plan to get in another long run next weekend and hopefully mix in some speed work on the track.

Hamstring is doing much much better. What a difference a week makes. Now SLC is definitely a go. When I read your post I didn't catch the Deena reference and I was wondering who you would know who competed in Athens. The 5:20 pace during a training made me a bit suspicious but it still didn't register until I read the comments. This was right after reading that Google was changing their name to Topeka. Duh!

Well I hope the hip is improving. Since running faster is less painful better maybe you should run 520s.

I wanted to test out the hamstring before the race next week.  Fortunately it held up fine.  The course was fairly challenging because it ran around and through the U of U campus.  There were lots of corners and we even got to run up some stairs.  I held the lead until about 1.5 miles when James slowly passed.  I stuck within about 10 ft for awhile and then he slowly got about 100 yds ahead.  I finished about 10 seconds behind (2nd overall) and my prize was a mini U of U helmet.  I plan to put it on my desk at work because I am surrounded by BYU grads.  Great race for the $10 entry fee.

Time is unofficial. This year obviously went a lot better than last (time and place) despite going into it scared to death that my hamstring or achilles would break.  I honestly didn't know if I would get through a few miles but after I got going I knew I had a chance.

At the start line I saw a few familiar faces (Albert and Bill) but there were no Africans and nobody who I knew could beat me.  That was odd.  No money this year?  I still assumed that somebody much faster than me had to be there.  The gun went off and quickly found myself in 3rd place behind two guys I didn't recognize.  What I didn't know is if they were running the whole or the half and I would have to wait until the turnaround at Sugar House Park to find out.  After the first mile I knew that the achilles problem wasn't as bad as I thought but the hamstrings still lingered in the back of my mind.  They weren't hurting then so I did my best to forget about it.  After a few miles, as I was going down 21st South, Steve Anderson passed me and then Michael Nordberg, who beat me last year in the Mid Mountain Marathon.  I still didn't know if any of these guys were in the Full.  A mile later 3 of the 4 guys ahead of me turned back up 21st leaving me and Michael and anyone else daring to challenge, to compete for the Full.  Michael had about 100yds on me for the next 3 or 4 miles but then I started gaining on him going up Keller Lane.  Maybe my surge was motivated my my familiarity with the neighborhood.  I waved at the house of my old best friend (Chad) and I threw my gloves and headband to a guy I work with, Brian.  I also told Brian that I would catch the guy ahead of me eventually and that he needed to wash my gloves and bring them to work on Monday.  The last part I didn't say out loud.

So I felt great going up Keller and was looking forward to some fast miles once I hit 23rd East.  I ran 10 and 11 in about 5:35 and finally caught Michael near Cottonwood Elementary.  I exchanged the typically, "I remember you from..." and didn't see him again.  I hadn't been watching my splits so when I saw 1:13:30 at the half I was pretty surprised.  I was thinking...geez...I have a chance at sub 2:30 as long as the body holds up.  Maybe that thought jinxed me because at about mile 14 my right hamstring really started tightening up.  At that point I was thinking about what the papers would read, "local white boy was leading the race but wussed out and quit because of a hamstring problem."  I certainly didn't want to pull a Boozer so I abruptly stopped in the street and stretched the hamstrings.  I stretch fast (hence the reason for my injuries) so I was back at it after only a few seconds.  I don't even think the police car noticed.  From then on the hamstring started feeling measurably better and by mile 18 I was pretty confident that it would hold up through end.   The boring/flat miles on 5th East were a challenge but at least I felt like I was moving unlike last year when the wheels were falling off.  As I turned onto State Street I really got excited because I was passing the taco stand at Sears and I was building up my energy for that last climb.  Fortunately I didn't have to maneuver through the half runners because of the police escort and I finished that crappy mile in 6:26 (last year was 6:42).  It was all downhill from there and I ended up finishing in an unofficial time of 2:30:30.  Not sub 2:30 but still a big improvement.  After review of my splits my first >= 6 min mile didn't come until mile 23 while last year that came at mile 9.  I am crediting my new Lunar Racers.  I have to thank Bill Cobler (winning master's runner) for also sticking around for the award ceremony, which didn't start until 1 PM.  He has some good war stories.  The low budget purse clearly explains the absence of the Africans.  Of course I am still very fortunate because had they been there I wouldn't have won.

Fritz - congratulations on the win and a solid time. This is definitely a PR equivalent. I'd take 2:30 in SLC over 2:26 in St. George any day. Probably worth 2:23-2:24 in St. George. Good progress. I think with proper training you do have a realistic shot for 2012 Trials, you just have to not doubt that you can and train accordingly.

Just kidding, that's totally ridiculous to win by 10 minutes with such an amazing time. We HAVE to race together when we both feel good one of these days.

Road my bike to the top of Big Mountain.  The gate was closed at Little Dell and there were several wet/narrow sections due to the melting snow drifts.  This made for a slower than usual decent but I think my ascent was at least as fast as I was doing it last year later in the year.  Sadly I decided to retire, but not throw away, my favorite bike shorts that I have had since 2002.   Considering all the miles we have gone through together I really don't see how I couldn't ever put them in a garbage can.

I'd love some pointers on recovering from a marathon to run another in four weeks. I'm doing the same with Ogden and then Grandmas in June. Looks like you have used the elliptical a bit this time.

From Fritz on Tue, May 04, 2010 at 18:45:58 from 65.116.113.69

Steve, I am definitely a gym rat especially after races. I don't see any point in running for at least 3 days after a marathon but I still maintain my fitness riding my road bike, the elliptical, or stair stepper. I just know that it can't hurt to take it very easy for several days until you feel semi recovered. If I feel really inclined to run the first week I try to stick to a treadmill or grass. I think my daily log shows what I am talking about. Hope this helps. See you at ogden.

From Steve on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 00:15:06 from 12.190.81.225

I just wonder how to maintain the peak you reached for the first marathon. I mean you finish it and then you have 4 weeks until the next. Is the taper nonexistant, and do you fit long runs in again?

From Fritz on Wed, May 05, 2010 at 01:44:34 from 97.117.45.67

With 4 weeks in between I try to do one long long run two weeks out and a couple 13-15. I didn't run that long last weekend (4/24) but I ran 22.5 miles on Sunday. I probably won't run more than 13 this weekend and then I will take it easy on the days leading up to the race. Probably 10-15 miles between Monday and Friday. That type of taper has seemed to work in the past.

I went into this race with the goal of breaking 2:30.  I barely pulled it off, although it took more effort than I would have liked.  At the start line I only recognized BJ (not easy to miss) and Steve Anderson and a couple minutes before the race Jeff (jtshad) introduced himself to me. Except for them I really had no idea what other competition would show up.  The race got off on time and I soon found myself trailing only BJ, who got off to a blazing, sub 5 minute start.  I have no idea how he ran so fast, considering that he did a sub 10 hour Ironman two weeks ago. Compared to last year I was doing well through the first few miles but I still felt that those mid 5 min miles were taking too much effort.  I backed off slightly at around mile 5 because nobody was around me and I knew I needed to conserve more if I was ever going to hang on at the end.  After I got out the canyon I started to got into a decent rhythm and by mile 10 I passed BJ's relay partner.  Now I was all alone in front and solely responsible for blocking at least 20 cars who were stuck behind the pace car.  I got through the half way point in about 1:13, about 1 minute faster than I had expected.  I was feeling fairly relaxed at that point so it seemed very realistic that I could run a sub 1:17 second half and get under 2:30.  My optimism lasted until I had to climb that hill at mile 14.5.   I tried to hold back but  I still think I ended up pushing too hard because my legs never felt the same.  A relay runner caught me at the dam, fortunately he was only a relay runner.  After the dam is where I was planning to put in some fast miles to make up to foreseeable breakdown at mile 23.  I managed close to 5:40s from 18-23 which basically left me having to run around 6s to get sub 2:30.  Somewhere in there I passed Allie at an aid station.  Thanks for the cheer and I apologize for not taking your water or giving a high five.  It was one of those, "oh sh**, I have five miles left" moments.  Fortunately I survived those last 3 miles which included a few tunnels, dodging and weaving through runners, and 2 foot rollers that felt like hill sprints.

Overall I felt good about the race and I was especially happy that I didn't finish in 2:30:01.  My Garmin was obviously on the fritz during the first few miles.  I promise I didn't run a 5:57 first mile.

Wow. This was my first 50 miler and I must say it was a killer.   I led the race until about mile 20 and then ran with the eventual winner (Kevin Schilling) until he pulled away at mile 30.  Windy Pass is definitely a hill to remember.  I seriously thought I was at the top at least 5 times but it just kept going.  When I summited I felt like I had the strength to put in some quick downhill miles but my left knee was acting up and I had to tip toe my way down.  Being forced to run gingerly for 10 miles was miserable to say the least.  I just hope my knee is ok.

I will add more tomorrow after I have slept for 14 hours.

Race Report:

I woke up at 3 AM and got to the start area by 4:15.  With some advice from past runners I had 4 drop bags, two with shoes, all of them with a good supply of GU and Clif Bloks and one with EFS liquid shot.  In case of a desperate situation I stashed one of those Red Bull shots in the bag at mile 33.

The race started out at a leisurely pace down the Provo River Trail and then turned south up a trail.  After about two miles it was just me and Kevin Schilling running together.  We chatted for a bit and I learned the guy is nuts.  He is a pulmonary doctor and runs 50's, 100's, marathons, almost every other week.  After about 4 miles we started up some steep sections and Kevin dropped back.  Because I didn't know the course I was hoping that I could just follow his lead but I was feeling good, not working too hard, and decided to take my chances.  As the climb continued the course meandered its way through and over patches of snow.  At about mile 10 the course continues south along a ridge line road.   Although the road was mostly covered with snow there were many sections that I was able to run on the snowless shoulder and just deal with the occasional puddle and/or bush.  This continued until about mile 15.  Miles 15-22 were mostly on a dirt trail and all downhill.  The downhill on the road felt good but there were also some really steep downhills through the woods that started to aggravate my knee.  It was frustrating not being to let loose down those hills, which I am usually pretty good at.  Probably because of my slow descents Kevin caught up at about mile 20.  We mostly ran together on the road section up Hobblecreek Canyon.  We commented on the excessive size of the properties in that canyon and all the truck drivers who somehow felt the need to drive 60 mph.   By aid station 6 at mile 26 my knee was really bothering me on even the slightest inclines.  Kevin slowly put some distance on me and I didn't see him again after we went through the Meltzer aid station at mile 29.  For some reason I totally forgot that he was serving PB&J sandwiches.  I was on at least my 10th GU at that point and some real food would have tasted good.  From 29 I resorted to hiking on the steep inclines and running the flats.  I went through AS 8 at mile 33 feeling ok but I certainly wasn't prepared for the upcoming death march to the top of Windy Pass.  If I had known I would drank the entire coke.  The never ending climb didn't start until mile 39 and although it was only 1.5 miles it felt like an eternity.  I think mile 40 clocked in at 26 mins just to give you a sense of the incline.  After about 5 false pitches and almost going off course I FINALLY made it to the top only to find that the next aid station was still about a half mile away at the bottom of a super sketchy descent.  My knee really hurt at this point so I had to tip toe my way down.  I stumbled into the aid station and I did my best to rehydrate.  The next 5 miles ran across lots of snow fields and mostly rocky single track.  I did my best to keep moving although I knew that the field behind me must have been gaining ground.  I reached the aid station 10 (mile 46) in about 8 hrs and then had the fun chore of running down the road to the finish.  At this point I might as well have been in a coma so my pace really didn't matter anymore.  After what felt like running 10 min miles I finally reached the park and jogged through the finisher's shoot.  After thanking the race director for putting that mountain at mile 40, I immediately sat in the Provo River with the hope of speeding up the recovery of my knees.

Overall I was happy with the my finish although I wish I my knee would have felt better so I could have pushed it on the downhills.  The race was very well organized, the views were incredible, and the volunteers at the aid stations were awesome.  After the race I also met some great people who I hope to run with in the future.

Glad you're going to write more. I was going to say that this was the shortest race report per mile ever. And thinking you've reached the top and finding out you haven't is the worst. Great job on your first 50 miler!

That is an amazing time and place for your first ever 50-miler on a very tough course. Nice work- do you plan on running more ultras? You sure could kick some major butt!

Good stuff Fritz -

Most of your description brought back hellish memories of last year's race! But also got me wanting more.

Don't feel too bad about Windy - last year that mile took me 30 minutes! 30 minutes... what the crap?!

Thanks everyone. I apologize for the slow response.

Jon, more ultras are to come. I am currently signed up for Speedgoat and Wasatch 100. I would try Logan Peak but I don't think my knee will be healed in time. Looks like your training is going well.

Fritz, so I have a bit of an achilles problem right now and am doing a lot of cross training. Did a workout on the Stairmaster at the gym today and did 125 floors. I have to say that after that I'm probably more impressed by your 510 floors on that damn thing than I am with your marathon wins this year.

You know they have a race up the Empire State Building every year. You should definitely enter. Might be a good cash prize that could pay for your trip to New York.

From Fritz on Sun, Jun 27, 2010 at 20:32:20 from 65.116.113.69

Well I have to say that I have quite a bit of experience on the stairmaster because I always use it when I am injured, which has been more often than I would like. I am at least glad that someone else appreciates it and the suffering it can cause. My knee is still messed up so I might have to start a stairmaster club. I think I saw you at the sugar house 24 hour fitness on saturday. I hope your achilles heals soon so you can get back outside.

Unfortunately the recovery has been much slower than expected and my hopes of running the Wasatch 100 in September are fading quickly. I refuse to do nothing so in addition to my weekly PT and exciting gym workouts, I will probably bike more and possibly mix in some cycling races....quite frustrating to say the least.

Congrats on the PR and top finish this weekend! Looks like you had a great race. It must be that clean SLC air or...hard work.

That race looks intense and just might cure my need for something different and challenging. It would be great to ride sometime. I usually head up the canyons when I go alone and I occasionally ride with FFKR on Sundays. Do you still ride with a club? 2 miles in the outside pool at Steiner.  Yes, I have resorted to water because my knee is not improving.  The swim brought back so many memories of the days training for triathlons and hanging out at Steiner every day after and before work.  Considering that I haven't done a real swim workout in over 2 years and since my multiple abdominal surgeries, it actually felt pretty good.   Hopefully with a new routine of swimming some work at the gym, more icing, stretching and roller my knee will begin to improve.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it will only improve from here.  I definitely can't run on the road yet but I may venture over to Sugar House Park for some laps on the grass.  My tan has really been suffering since I have been stuck in the gym for so long.

On a side note, today was the finish of the Wasatch 100.  Congrats to all of the finishers.  I am very disappointed that I had to drop out.   Next year or else!

miles are coming back! how are you doing?

From Fritz on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 15:15:16 from 65.116.116.6

I think I can say that the knee is officially improving but I think it will still be awhile before I can run a lot on roads and up and down hills. Around 5-7 miles is about all it's good for on the treadmill right now...at least that's something. To mix up my boring gym routine I decided to order these fancy water running shoes

http://www.thetriathletestore.com/detail.aspx?ID=1970 I hope they work!

Do you think a PR is in the works for this Saturday?

From allie on Thu, Oct 07, 2010 at 16:14:39 from 161.38.218.168

glad to hear things are improving. those shoes are crazy, but pretty cool too. i might have to invest in a pair. let me know how they work out for you.

as for saturday, i hope a PR is in the works, but we'll see. i really just want to break 18 so i can move on with my life :)

Instead of getting in my car and going to the gym I decided to venture out on the road and run at Sugar House Park. I made it 2 times, yes 2 times, around the park and was able to finish with a 5:30 mile.  6:27 average for the run.  My fitness is fine because I have been spinning at the gym and doing other random exercises but knee just isn't ready for anything serious.  A 5k might be in the near future..

666 is the sum of the first 36 natural numbers (i.e. 1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 34 + 35 + 36 = 666), and thus a triangular number. That's cool.

Apparently it is also means something else that I wasn't aware. I will make sure to add another .01 next time. :)

From Rob on Thu, Oct 14, 2010 at 20:49:42 from 72.254.87.12

FYI:

666 is an even number.

666 has a representation as a sum of 2 squares: 666 = 15^2+21^2

666 = is the 36th triangular number.

666 has the representation 666 = 3^6-63.

666 divides 73^2-1.

666 repeats a single digit in base 10.

I went to the gym prepared with swimming fins, running shoes, and my new water running shoes.  It took me about 65 minutes to water run a mile (72 lengths).  It was definitely the slowest and hardest mile I have ever run.  It was a huge struggle at first but I made a break through once I figured out that breathing was much easier with my face above the water.  Odd how that works.  After the run/swim I decided that I needed to redeem myself by running a mile on the treadmill.  That mile was 10 times faster (6:30).

I am typically in a hurry because I don't wake up earlier enough to be able to waste any time, e.g if I need to run 13 miles I typically wake up 1:50 before I need to be to work. 5 minutes to get running stuff on, 1:25 for the run, 5 minutes to shower/change clothes and 15 minutes for the drive to the office. I guess if I want to get faster I should leave less time for my runs.

Everything was going great until mile 10 when we turned south to run parallel with I-15. The next 16 miles with the exception of 2-3 were probably the windiest conditions I have ever run or biked in. Nick (fairly short) McCombs :) and I teamed up and took turns drafting for about 7 of miles until he dropped back with about 5 miles left. From there I managed a few quicker miles and then really suffered for the last 2 into the tornado. Someone should really consider putting in a wind farm and/or just changing the direction of the race depending on the wind conditions. I wonder what my time would have been if I ran the course backwards today. 1800 ft of elevation gain but 16 miles of it aided by a 20-30 mph tailwind...I don't think I'll try that any time soon. I will post my speedy and then not so speedy splits later.

Below are the splits.  The first 6 miles are obviously very fast.  I tried to hold back a bit during 4-7 because I didn't want to beat my legs up too early in the race.  I was also talking to Nick McCombs quite a bit during these miles which didn't make sense at the time because I thought I would be the one who needed to conserve energy for the later miles.

Miles 8-10 had a few rollers but were still fairly fast.  Nick and I ran side by side.

At around mile 10 we ran under the freeway and turned south towards Mesquite.  After just .5 miles going that direction and feeling how much the wind was slowing us down it became apparent that the race and later miles could get ugly.  Miles 12 and 13 were especially hard (clocked a 6:04 and 6:30) because there was a long climb and the headwind must have been in the 20-30 mph range.  Despite these slow miles I still crossed that half point line in ~1:12:30.  I knew the second half would just get slower so I came to the realization very quickly that a PR was out of the question.

After mile 13 Nick and I figured it didn't make sense for both of us to fight the wind so we started running in a line and switching the lead about every 3-5 minute.  Probably due to our mounting delirium and efforts to avoid the wind, we almost tripped each other at least 5 times.

By mile 15 we started catching the half marathoners.  Passing them helped a bit mentally and it felt better knowing that we weren't the only ones suffering through the wind.

Around mile 19 was the first time I realized that I could actually win the race. Nick wasn't pushing the pace much when he was leading and I felt that if I surged in the next two miles I may be able to put a gap between us.

My chance came sooner than I thought.  While Nick was leading up a hill at around mile 20 or 21 he started slowing considerably.  I jumped ahead, surged to the top of the hill and then ran down the backside as fast as possible.  I think that was the 5:36 mile I clocked at mile 22.  I didn't look back after that.  Miraculously at mile 23 the course took a turn to the NORTH (yes NORTH), which meant that the wind wasn't in my face for the first time in 13 miles.  That was a huge relief but sadly only lasted for .5 miles.  Miles 24 and 25 seemed unbelievably long, especially straight and no less windy than the last 13.  Fortunately for the last .7 the course turned back to the north so I was able to put in a last semi surge into the finish.

Overall I was very happy with my effort and the finish.  I only wish the wind wasn't such a factor because I think I would have been very close to a PR (sub 2:26) or at least better than my 2:29 at Ogden.  Oh well.  To get a sense of the wind, Kyle Perry from BYU and the guy who won last's year marathon in 2:19 ran just over 1:11 in the half.

Wow! Incredible time in the wind, and I know

your training has been short since getting back into it. Nice job..

way to pick up the win and the big 1500 dollar paycheck! too bad about the wind. I ran this last year and there was really no wind at all, just scary redneck pickup trucks trying to kill me. well done!!

Nice work and congrats on your 3rd marathon win of the year! Weren't you having knee issues for awhile? I guess that's healed up now. :)

From Walter on Sat, Nov 20, 2010 at 21:29:40 from 24.10.169.110

Wow, that is a great time on that course! Its a brutal last 10 miles for sure! Way to get another 1st big guy!

From Burt on Sun, Nov 21, 2010 at 03:29:41 from 72.223.84.236

What? No course record? You only had to beat 2:19 and some change. LOL. Great job! Sounds like it was crazier than last year.

From allie on Sun, Nov 21, 2010 at 14:34:11 from 174.23.238.75

that is quite the comeback from injury in such a short amount of time. amazing. glad your knee held up. congratulations on the win and a great race in that nasty wind.

From Paul on Sun, Nov 21, 2010 at 19:19:18 from 174.27.246.50

Great job. I've heard that course is quite hard to begin with, and it sounds like the wind made it almost unbearable. Way to persevere.

From Superfly on Sun, Nov 21, 2010 at 23:15:38 from 208.117.127.110

Great job on the win. I was planning on racing this race until about a week and a half ago... at the time I was pretty bummed I wasn't racing. But after hearing about the horrible wind I'm happy I didn't. That's an excellent time with the wind being so intense. That second half is hard enough and the wind would have killed me.

Way to win 3 marathons in one year!

Thanks everyone.

Scott- I saw a few truckers on the first downhill. I suspect the last time they saw runners was during last year's race.

Seth - I injured my knee in early June and wasn't able to race all summer. It started feeling a lot better about 4 weeks ago.

Rob- yes, I am happy with the time considering the conditions

Burt- I apologize for not breaking the course record. 14 minutes is nothing. maybe next year. :)

From Bec on Fri, Nov 26, 2010 at 00:27:29 from 71.199.12.198

Sorry to see that your training had to be put to such a tough test.

However, I think you showed the wind who is boss. Nice win and all things considered GREAT time!

I had to show up early to the gym because I didn't want to be embarrased again and have to leave during roll call.

I staked my claim on my bike then ran 2 miles on the treadmill. While running my key fell off my shoe and mysteriously disappeared under or in the treadmill.  I figured they would have to cut my lock off my locker but miraculously someone turned in the key to the front desk. Thanks to that someone for saving my precious lock.  Ran another 4 miles after the spin class at a 6:30 pace.

I think these high intensity bricks are really helping my fitness and had a lot to do with why I felt strong in my last race.

Another day at the gym on the treadmill.  My annual membership to 24 Hour Fitness is $20 so I figure it costs me at most $.13 per visit (20/150).  There is no way they are making money on me after factoring in the water and electricity I use each visit.  Gyms should really figure out how to send the energy from the stationary bikes to the treadmills.

I run on the treadmills at 24 hour fitness too. You also have to factor in the cost to repair the treadmills after running on them so hard that they start to smoke, or just stop working in the middle of the run. I've broken several. I'm sure that's happened to you, too.

From Rob on Wed, Dec 22, 2010 at 15:36:59 from 72.254.59.83

Lucky for us, the hundreds of people who sign up for Gym memberships and never use them pay for us that actually do.

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Dec 23, 2010 at 10:04:46 from 24.10.248.6

That's funny. How can $20.00 be your annual membership? Did you sign up in 1957?

That broken treadmill second from the end was broken by me. About three weeks ago I ran 13 miles on it - the last 10 in 59 minutes. The last mile it started to smell really bad and then it just stopped about a quarter mile before I wanted to finish. It's been broken ever since. So, if you factor in wear and tear on the equipment, they are probably making even less off you.

Maybe that's why they can't fix any of the equipment when it breaks.

From Fritz on Thu, Dec 23, 2010 at 10:36:34 from 65.116.116.6

Not quite. In 2005 the Trolley Square 24 Hour Fitness opened and they offered a deal where I paid $800 up front to cover 3 years ($22 a month) and then $20 a year for the rest of my life. I suspect they want me to die or move to Montana. Since I signed up I think I have used around 17 different locations (Colorado Springs, Palm Springs, Palo Alto, San Francisco (2), Berkeley, Salt Lake City (3), LA area (4), Seattle (3), Provo (1)) Quite possibly the best investment I will ever make.

From Rob on Thu, Dec 23, 2010 at 10:44:01 from 72.55.213.36

5 years ago a co-worker and me wrote up a scientific report with graphs and everything showing how much more productive healthy employees where than non-healthy and presented it to the CEO of our company. Because of that my company started paying for our monthly gym memberships. 2 years ago when the economy sucked and they were laying people off, cutting the bonus program and 401K match the only thing people protested about was the gym membership so they didn't drop it.

Best report I ever wrote!!! :)

I ran through the gate at the entrance without telling the guard my name so they sent a patrol car after me. The car caught up to me after about a half a mile. Since I was near the end of my run I didn't think it would be smart to get in a chase so I stopped. As he called in my name I got in a few good stretches so it wasn't a complete waste of time. Fortunately he let me take off and apologized for "breaking my rhythm".
