In case you didn't know and didn’t get stuck in traffic, today was the SLC Marathon (not to be confused with the race that was on Monday).  When I showed up I had no idea who else would be there but I figured a $2,000 purse for a western state resident would attract at least a couple high teen marathoners. But to my surprise the only people I saw at the start line running the marathon were the locals, i.e. James, Dennis S., Rossy, Steve and Bill and then a couple of guys who had Boulder Running shirts. Of course this didn’t really change my mentality or strategy for the race but I was still surprised.

The race started promptly at 7 and I went out with Brad, Ben and Riley who were running the half.   Their first few miles were low 5’s, which felt slightly uncomfortable for the start of a marathon so I backed off a bit. Passed Jake and Lulu at about mile 1.5 and pretended that I wasn’t working hard. Went through the first 5k in 16:09 (just because I had to beat my 17:15 from last week) then had some slower miles as I rounded SHP and got back to 17th east. Although that out and back in the SHP parking was  a little odd I am glad it was there or else I would have never known Seth was in the race and wasn’t too far behind. I didn’t look back again but just knowing he was there probably kept me more focused. The 17th east stretch felt fine but the hill up 27th and up Keller Lane felt like it took a little out of me. Fortunately the Evergreen cheerleaders were out in full force with pompoms plus I knew that once I got on 23rd and headed south my quads would have some time to recover. The next few miles felt good and I went through the halfway point at 1:11:33, which is exactly where I wanted to be. Miles 13 through about 17 were some of my favorite miles because they are slightly downhill and I oddly enjoyed the isolation and wide road on Van Winkle. After those miles I began the LONG straight stretch on 5th east. It was super uneventful and all I can remember is some guy talking to my bike pacer about the pace car. After 2 hours staring at it my best guess is a corvette with an ugly white stripe. After the 5th east march it was nice to merge with the half runners and run the rest of the way with them.  One girl sped up as I passed her and we probably ran .2 miles together, which means I ran solo for the other 26. This was about mile 24 and then I had the fun time of finishing up state street than running as fast as possible to the finish on South Temple. Gateway was a more exciting finish because it got louder but it was still fun to finish with a downhill stretch.

Overall I feel pretty good about the race. It was a 4.5 min PR on this course and despite going out a bit too fast, like always, I didn’t lose too much at the end. My only regret is I let one 6+ mile slip in at the end. :)

Enough about me. I think the performance of the day goes to Steve who threw down a 2:37 (1st masters, 3rd overall) only 5 days after Boston. Andrea also had a great come back run winning the half by 2 minutes. Ben, Allie, Devra, James, and Rossy plus the two troopers/pacers (Scott and Dan) all ran well.

After the race it was fun to hang out with Nicolai and Thomas (coolest kids in the world) and chat with many of the above.

Wow, great run, way to go on the win and the course PR, plus a little change in your pocket to boot.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 15:44:25 from 68.107.222.43

You couldn't talk that girl to run more than .2 with you? ;)

Congrats on the win!!! (And the little extra pocket change! :) )

From Jake K on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 15:45:50 from 67.182.215.126

If I ever see you throw down a 15 minute 5K the week before a marathon, I'll be putting money on the world record going down! :-)

Great run today Fritz. 2:25 is awesome just a couple weeks after the 50K. You are on a tear so far this year and its fun to watch how well you are running. Congrats on the win and big course PR!

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 15:46:23 from 174.27.212.157

CONGRATULATIONS Fritz! It was so exciting to watch you run so effortlessly breezing to the winning finish, uncontested! I lost part of my larynx screaming my heads off! EXCELLENT JOB!!!! :)

From allie on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 16:01:49 from 97.126.212.58

congrats, fritz. sounds like you ran your race perfectly. i am glad you enjoyed the isolation on van winkle; i definitely struggled there :)

From Superfly on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 16:12:02 from 74.211.21.81

Awesome job Friz! A 2:25 on that course is impressive. Way to stay focused while running solo and still hit your time goal. I think a PR on the Ogden course is coming up.

Congrats on the dominant win! I was at Mile 23 and after you cruised by I kept checking my watch. I couldn't believe you were as far ahead as you were.

Congrats Fritz. It's going to be a good year for you.

In case you are wondering. 8 AM on Saturday during the SL Marathon is a great time to get a treadmill at the gym.

Wow! Nice work Fritz. You are a machine buddy:)

From Andrea on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 17:52:55 from 67.182.215.126

Awesome race today Fritz!! You are so consistent with your marathon times - it's super impressive. Running solo is hard...you need to go to a race with a big crowd and people to run against!

Jake did get a nice photo of you heel striking on the downhill :)

From Ben VanBeekum on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 18:55:34 from 67.169.246.46

Good run today Fritz, it was good talking to you at the start. Great time on a tough course. Again congrats on the #1 finish!!

I saw you with your motorcycle paparazzi come into the finish! It was SO impressive! You looked so strong charging to the arch! Way to GO!

What a sweet time on that course. This is just such a different year for the Utah crowd. Lots of fun after the race. I showed up at 12 like the race dircetor said for awards and was the only person in the parking lot. Good times..

From Fritz on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 22:19:51 from 67.182.226.25

Thanks everyone!

@Teena - I was surprised she stayed up that long considering she was about to be lapped :)

@Jake - for now I will just shoot for a sub 17 5k the week before. I don't like to waste my allotted marathon pace miles.

@Andrea - Check out Meb who is the last guy in this group http://vimeo.com/11574503 Also Kara Goucher is a heel striker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0EQDxdY_No&feature=player_embedded I think she is fast. :) That said, I think this is something I should work on.

@Rob - Thanks for the tip. I hope the hot tub is empty the day after the SLC Marathon.

From Tara on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 23:12:31 from 75.169.147.99

So cool!! Nice work and fun to have some cash!

From Jake K on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 07:12:45 from 67.182.215.126

Don't listen to Andrea :-) Its actually pretty much impossible to run downhill at marathon pace w/out using your heels. That's what they are there for!

From RAD on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 13:41:43 from 98.202.23.178

Wonderful race as always Fritz! Enjoy that moo-lah...and the hot tub.

From Dan Varga on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 17:51:44 from 174.27.234.106

Congrats on a fantastic race! I expected the prize money to bring out some out of state talent, glad to see it went to a bunch of locals on the FRB. Nice work!

Fritz I was just lazing about watching some TV. I looked up and there your picture was on FoX13. Your a celebrity now. I'm still lazing as I type this....
