First off, congratulations to everyone who raced today.  There were some incredible performances.

As for me, it's hard to say how I really feel about this race.  I thought I would be on today and I wasn't.  My goal was a ~1:07 and I wasn't even close.

I struggled immensely in the early miles which has been a trend for my last few half's.  This time, however, I don't think I went out too fast and I didn't exactly have an excuse (SLC I had 30 miles in my legs in 2 months and Provo I used as a training run).  I should be able to run 5:10s down a mountain.  Apparently I can't, or at least not today.  Mile 3 about killed me and I was on the brink of a meltdown, which officially has never happened in my 12 years of running. Fortunately the running gods didn't want to break my confidence completely so they gave me back some fast miles for 5 and 6.  From there I was in survival mode and did everything I could to get in a rhythm and hold off the oncomers who I could have sworn were on my heals the entire time.  Unfortunately Kyle Perry must have hit a bigger wall than me because he came back into my sights at about mile 10 which gave me much needed motivation to keep up my pace. I didn't quite catch him but at least having someone to chase kept me focused through the finish.  What I don't understand is why I was suffering as much through 3 and 4 as I was at the end.  This just doesn't make for an enjoyable race. :)  What's done is done so now to what's next.

From my Plans and Goals post,  After Utah Valley, "I plan to spend the summer season doing some damage to the local track (I might have to jump the fence) with the hope of simply getting faster and setting 5k, 10k, and half marathon PRs.  I have never specifically trained for the shorter distances because I never raced in high school or college, but I suspect that by doing so I will see big improvements in my marathon.  The end goal of it all will be to set a PR (sub 2:22) at Chicago in early October.  I admit, of course, that the OTQ is my ultimate objective but that goal will have to be kept in my head for now."

Basically what it comes down to is no more dinkin' off.  More miles (slower and faster) are needed.  Simple as that.
