Been a long day.  Woke up at 4, ran a marathon, waited until 2:15 to get my award (Steve and Rob can vouch for this as they waited as well), mowed my lawn then watched CAL beat BYU (HURRAY!) in the College Premier Division Rugby Championships at Rio Tinto.  Sorry Cougar fans.  Most memorable moment: Lady at mile 10 saying, "you guys are running stinkin' fast".  I also saw lots of bloggers, Steve (2nd overall), Rob (1st masters), Chad Robinson (1st marathon and sub 3 hours), Teena Marie (hopefully a big PR) and of course James and Allie at mile 21 although they may not have noticed that I tried to wave.

Report:

Typical race day routine. I woke up at 4 AM, three hours before race time, drank lots of water, took a shower, gathered up my race gear and drop bag then was dropped off at the busses at 4:45.  The best part about the morning was that I was allowed to go on the "VIP" bus because I won the race last year.  The two major benefits were that there is a bathroom on the bus (no porta potty!) AND I didn't have to get off the bus until 20 mins before race time.  That was huge, especially for this race, because I always dread shivering sitting on the ground and fighting for space near the fires.  So basically the morning couldn't have gone any better.

I left the bus at around 6:45 just in time to get a quick warm up.  It was probably around 55 degrees, warmer than usual, and it looked like the weather would cooperate and not rain.  I did a quick warm up down the road and chatted with some bloggers at the start line.  My legs felt fresh so I knew a good race was possible but I really had no idea how I would place because Seth Wold was in the mix along with a few guys who have beat me in the past.

The gun went off and Bryant Jensen quickly jumped out ahead as he was running the relay.  Then I was next and Seth was following closely behind.  I typically refuse to look behind me during races so I really had no idea how the close the other runners were.  Seth and I were side by side for the first 7 miles until Seth suddenly stopped to tie his shoe lace.  Keeping to my tradition I didn’t turn around and probably built a 5 second lead.  At that point I was feeling good and thought that if I could just keep me pace I could possibly drop him for good.  That was the first time I knew I could win if I could hold on.  The next 6 miles (7 – 13) are some of the slower miles of the race but they felt smooth and I made sure to hold back slightly on the uphills.  I ran into Bryant, who was now pacing his teammate, at around mile 12 and from then on it was only me and the biker guy until I started catching the half marathoners at around mile 18.  I was happy, although a little concerned, to see my 13.1 split at 1:11:30.  Both of my last two Half’s were slower than that but I wasn’t about to slow down because I didn’t want to be caught and I was feeling good.  I held back slightly again on the big uphill at mile 15, although the quads were still burning, and just made sure to keep it steady until the fun began down the canyon.  By the time I hit the bridge I knew I had a good sized lead but I still had some fast miles left in me and I wanted to see if I could beat my St. George time from 2009.  The canyon miles felt quick and it was nice be around the half runners as I descended.  I came out the canyon in decent shape although the legs were now getting wobbly enough that I knew the impending last few miles on the path would be struggle.  Of course those miles weren’t exactly fun but I have had worse.  I clocked myself at exactly 2:25 over 26.42 miles.  Chip time came in at 2:25:04.

Ultimately the race went about as well as I could have expected.  All I wanted to do was beat my 5k time (16:44) from last weekend and see if I could hang on. :)  I think I succeeded (first 5k was16:33) and I set a PR of about 2 minutes on a harder course (previous best was a 2:26:48 at St. George).  Going in I thought a 2:27 was possible but it would still be a stretch because the ramp up to this race was very rushed and I really only went into this race with about 3 quality weeks of running training; a 58 mile week, an 80 mile week that included a 23 mile run and the Provo Half, and a 70 mile that ended with a 5k.  But what I think I did do right was get in some quality and painful miles by running the Provo City Half two weeks ago and the Law Day Run 5k last weekend and then after the races I did a long cool down.  So although my times in those races weren't great, I think they helped me get mentality prepared and they shocked the system with some threshold miles.

Now my focus turns to running a fast half at Utah Valley and then building up more speed as I prepare for Chicago.

Nice job running to the win again in a "stinkin' fast" time. Congrats on running a very consistent race!

From Steve on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 08:50:39 from 76.27.106.132

Best marathon race I have seen anyone run in long time. Very strange race with so many dropouts and a long course and you ran that time completely solo. none of us ever got a glimpse of you. Wow!

Wow!

WOW!!!! So beyond impressive!!! :)

I'm wondering if you should pull off a treadmill stunt the day before every race!! :)

Congratulations, Fritz. You really are in a league of your own. :) :) :)

From Paul on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 15:49:03 from 24.10.141.104

Wow, incredible time. I think it's the second-fastest time on that course ever. (faster than my best anyway). You need to a find a fast sea-level course to try to hit a qualifier. Congrats on the win!

I think it is quite telling that you did so well off of a short buildup. I have had many successful races with a quick buildup. Last year at Boston I essentially only had one 70 mile week and I PRd by three mins. In the fall I got in 5months of training uninterrupted and I by the end of it I felt too drained to race well. I know that Allie has found that 6 weeks is an ideal marathon buildup for her (so has Paul). It seems like it might not be a bad idea to have some more down time in August to make sure you can pop a good one in Chicago.

From Ben VanBeekum on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 23:34:39 from 216.206.44.14

Fritz awesome race!! Congrats on the back to back. I don't know how you do it man!! Great consistancy!! Fun to watch, good luck in your future races this year!!

From Lily on Sun, May 22, 2011 at 23:38:32 from 67.199.178.210

I think short build up is beneficial as well. I think the body gets to fatigued in a longer build up. Nice work yesterday, your pictures from the finish are pretty awesome. Looking strong! way to be!

Nice win. Nice PR. Really tight and controlled race. I like looking at it by the 10K times. Congratulations and looking forward to seeing what you do in June at the half.

From Fritz on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 00:39:17 from 67.182.226.25

Thanks everyone.

James and Lily: I totally agree that you can overdue a buildup to race and if you had to choose between being under or over trained I think your odds are better being under trained. I think for me 5 or 6 weeks would be ideal with a couple races (half or 10k) mixed in.

Rob: I haven't had a good track record staying healthy but I will try my best. Stretching more than once a week should be an improvement over the past.

Paul: For my fast sea level race I am planning to run Chicago in October. OTC will be a stretch but if I can build in some consistent speed training I might, just might, have a shot. I am looking for something in July as well but can't seem to find any fast sea level races during that time. Good luck at Utah Valley. I will be running the half.

From Rob on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 11:13:02 from 206.71.84.68

Seriously Fritz, what one earth would make you run that stinking fast 13 minutes ahead of your nearest competitor. That is some crazy internal drive.

It's to bad it took everyone 3 minutes to cross the start line after the gun went off.

From Superfly on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 11:34:58 from 74.211.21.81

Super job! Very impressive since basically after the St. George half in January you've had to do so much elliptical and stuff with the injury. That was just a great all around marathon. Keep it up.

amazing job on saturday, fritz. you really were flying and you made it look effortless. congrats!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 14:03:37 from 192.168.1.1

Congratulations on a solid PR! Paul is correct - this is indeed the second fastest time in the history of the race, and it is knocking on the door of a trials qualifier in terms of quality. In practice, what will make the OTQ difficult is the lack of experience at sub-5:20 pace, which needs to be corrected before you give it a shot. But I would bet that if you took 10 guys that run 2:19 in Berlin, Dubai, or Rotterdam, and put them on the Ogden course, they will average around 2:25.

It is quite encouraging that you were able to pull this off with less than ideal training. I think what this is showing is that you may have a 2:15 in you. I am suspecting that your true optimal mileage is around 140 a week, but the challenge is learning to do it without injuries or overtraining. What leads me in that direction is that your 5 K speed is not very good unless you run the mileage, while you are able to avoid a spectacular blowup in the marathon while running only 40 miles a week. At the same time, adding a relatively small amount of consistency allowed you to improve from running in the 2:40 range all the way up to 2:25. Those indicators point to an abundance of slow twitch fibers, and runners of this type are like Brian Sell - they respond to high mileage.

Let me know if you are feeling good enough to come for a run this Saturday.

From AmberG on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 16:49:04 from 67.2.211.77

Congratulations on your win! Incredible!

From David on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 19:12:07 from 97.126.146.20

Those times are amazing. 16:44 for the 5k?? My track PR is 16:33! I saw you finish the race and thought you looked strangely familiar to last year's winner. Then I found out you were last year's winner. What I thought was interesting was that you were worried about your competition but you finished with a commanding lead! UVM will be my first marathon. I would like to be under 3:00. Any tips?

From Fritz on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 00:42:44 from 67.182.226.25

Sasha: seriously, 140 miles a weeks? I am not 120 pounds. :) First I need to get to my first 100 mile week and then I might consider it. I do appreciate the words of encouragement and the good advice. I think I will take a weekend off from serious running but maybe the week after. I will let you know.

David: Looking at your times it looks like a sub 3 is doable. The first half will definitely be faster because of the course but don't get carried away. The few seconds you gain in the early miles can be lost 10 fold at the end. I wouldn't be shy on the gels, drink as much water as possible, and just run your pace. Good luck!

Rob: I think they corrected the +3 gun time but I still think their times are bit off.

From David on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 02:39:03 from 97.126.146.20

Thanks for the advice. Good luck in the half!

From Rob on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 09:45:17 from 206.71.84.68

Oh! I'd just assumed everyone at the start line were admiring your shiny new shoes when the gun went off and tripped and fell or something.

From Jake K on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 11:54:43 from 155.100.213.19

That is a seriously awesome run (especially w/ a less-than-ideal training buildup). You raised the bar. Congrats on a great race!!!

From Seth on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 12:44:03 from 199.188.28.8

Great job man! Your determination to stay fit thru your injuries truly paid off. Keep at it!
