So much for taking it easy today and letting my shoulder heal. I really wanted to run the 5k but considering the intensity and downhill course I am sure I would have aggravated my shoulder even more. Looks like the competition was blazing fast. Wow. I have run a lot of races in California and the competition out there doesn't come close to the what I see at the local races in SLC. If there was some type of state competition I think Utah could hold its own with anybody.

Instead of the race I went to the gym to see how it would feel to run on the treadmill. Started out at 7 min pace, then 6:30, then 6, then ended with two miles under 5:30. Average pace 5:56. 0.5% incline. Run felt good.

The shoulder felt ok while I was running but now it's a little sore. Hopefully I can redeem myself next week at the Strider's Half. We'll see.

Utah would definitely win if we adjusted for the size of the population. It is not a surprise though. We have a large population that are taught by their religion on a regular basis to abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and develop their talents. Looking at some waist sizes in your average LDS congregation you can tell that much of that does not quite sink in, but it does with a certain percentage of the population. This results in more people following some of those principles compared to the "control group" that are not taught that on a regular basis. This also creates a measure of influence on those who are not in the church - they pick up some those values by osmosis. Thus more people who have a measure of talent do not completely waste it, and you see that in race results.

hope your shoulder gets to feeling better. i didn't race today either...but it sure was a fast race. i agree, competition in utah is fierce. what a great place to be a runner.

Sasha, I agree with your assessment. I also think that the good runners around here race more than good runners in other states. I know there are tons of good runners in northern and southern cal but they didn't show up at a lot of races. Maybe LDS people are more competitive too? :)

Allie, I wouldn't have run in that cold wind either. My hands wouldn't survive.
