My friend said he would pay me $25 for running a sub 1:10 through the half this weekend and my entire trip if I qualify.  Something tells me that $25 may not be enough to risk a complete blow up and/or hospitalization.  Expected payoff if I dare to run a sub 1:10 is $52.50.

Distance Time Probability Payoff Expected Payoff
Half sub 1:10 90% $25 $22.50
Full sub 2:19 3% $1,000 $30.00
        $52.50

it sounds like a pretty good deal...think of how much chocolate milk you could buy.

From Jake K on Tue, Nov 29, 2011 at 13:05:48 from 155.100.226.53

Do you get the $25 in addition to the cost of the entire trip if you qualify? The double dip?

From Fritz on Tue, Nov 29, 2011 at 14:29:54 from 65.116.116.6

Yes I would be double dipping. I think the intent of the payoff matrix was to give me a small incentive to go for it, while not costing him much, and for the real reward to only come if I pull it off, which has an extremely low if not 0 probability. As I see it he is only risking $52.50. See calculation above.

I will up the ante and offer you FREE ENTRY to any random track races that we put on next year if you run the SECOND half of the race under 1:10!

Thanks for the play by play. Sorry I couldn't pull it off. When I was a kid my excuse while skiing was that I didn't want to break my butterfinger. Today I figured a well run 2:21 was more boring than a fast half then a few wobbly miles at the end to end in 2:23:30.
