First off, hats off to Bryant for taking it out early, never looking back, and for crushing the course PR that was set back in 2007. It was his race today which became very clear in the first two miles when he pushed the pedal without any hesitation. A big congrats also goes out to many friends who set big PRs or who had solid races including Zak (2:21 debut), Brandon (2:32), Mike (2:25), Josh (2:36, 14 min PR!), Reed (2:38), Hille (2:54, 7 min PR), Jon (2:20), Iain (PR and Master's CR), Ben (2:26), Holt (2:26) and Scott (2:23). I know Riley and Matt felt like they could have run better but they still improved their previous bests by several minutes. Both of them will hit it out of the park soon, no doubt. Also I have to thanks Amiee and my mom for heading the cheer squad, the Utah County Crew and Joe H. (bootcamp sargent) for getting my butt in shape and Nate, Kevin and Adam for getting me on the track for once in my life. As for my race, I am very happy with my 2nd place finish considering the depth of the field and a slight PR. My pacing and execution, however, still leaves lots of room for improvement, especially those last 3 miles, so I am already looking forward to improve at CIM. On the bright side, I think I did manage a very small negative split (1:10:45, 1:09:40) which at least saved me from losing a bet and having to drive to Vegas for the night. But as we all know, the best times on that course are run with a 3 to 5 minute negative split. Next year it will be done! To my surprise, at least from my perspective, the race was rather uneventful. Bryant separated from me and Riley at about mile 3, I inched away from Riley and around mile 4 or 5, and then I ran solo to the end. I felt solid through 20 and was still able to hit some fast times from there to 24 (miles 21 was 5:01) but I really tanked once it flattened out at around mile 24.5 and finished with a couple of 5:30+ wobbly miles, which cost me a sub 2:20. Little did I know that those splits and hanging on for dear life were fortunately just enough to hold off the rest of the field, i.e. Jon, Iain, Zak, Aaron and Scott who finished right on my heels. I can only imagine there was some drama down the stretch amongst that group. So another marathon down (I think this was 43), a new PR, slightly wiser than the last, and now itching to get it done again, only faster.

Splits: 5:29,5:34,5:06,5:05,5:07,4:57,5:04,5:41,5:38,5:25,5:45,5:43,5:28 (HM 1:10:45),5:22,5:01,4:59,5:10,5:13,5:37,5:22,5:01,5:20,5:14,5:18,5:30,5:35

Nice performance as always Fritz! Congrats on race #43. I did not realize you had raced that many?

wow...what a year Fritz. Very cool PR. Your journey is definitely one for many to parrot. I am excited to see your improvement today. What an impressive pr considering you ran basically alone. Made it Happen...

Great race Fritz and great to talk to you after. As always, you are the man.

Nice work man! Looks like you had some serious competition down there.

I'm guessing you're not gonna be up for a run tomorrow:)

Amazing!!! :)

From Josh E on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 10:05:40 from 64.17.87.27

You are an inspiration, Fritz. Way to come back stronger and better after missing some races earlier this year. Your continued desire to compete and win is impressive.

I talked to Teren after the race and asked if he'd ever run another marathon. He responded that he didn't have the desire to do the training necessary to compete at the level that he would like. It's understandable since he has accomplished all that he is likely going to, but it's impressive that you have been able to keep at it a pretty high level all of these years.

From Kendall on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 11:00:23 from 70.208.4.157

Congrats on the PR and 2nd place finish...that's huge in such a competitive field. Love the negative split, that's some smart racin'. I think you had the bet backwards...should have been able to GO to Vegas.

From allie on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 12:33:53 from 97.117.87.43

what a race yesterday. so many great performances -- wow.

great job, as always. your marathons are always so consistent and solid. it's great to see you come back and do so well after a rough couple of months of injury earlier this year.

CIM!

Congrats on the great race and PR. I'm actually equally impressed by the fact that you've run 43 marathons are still chasing faster times...very inspiring.

Such a great performance given all the time you had to take off earlier this year. Congrats on the new PR. I love your fire and your desire to keep improving. Looking forward to many more great training/racing miles with you.

Excellent race and recap Fritz! You been so focused since coming back and to see it all come together for you so quickly, well.. bravo! The last sentence of the report is so very inspiring. Congratulations my friend!

From Jake K on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 20:33:19 from 67.177.11.154

Its funny how sometimes in the most competitive races, you end up running solo almost the entire way.

Congrats on a really good performance. Its been quite a journey this summer as you bounced back from some setbacks. Big time improvement from Park City :-)

I'm looking forward to finally toeing the line at the same marathon with you this fall!

From mike⇒nelson on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 21:48:30 from 98.202.168.196

Great race Fritz! It's inspiring how quickly you built up this fall. Keep it up.

From Fritzelac on Sun, Oct 06, 2013 at 23:02:57 from 24.120.143.57

Congratulations on this race. Reading in the first half of the year that you were out, I was thrilled to see that you came back even stronger as ever before. I agree with the previous comments.

From RileyCook on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 08:49:59 from 174.52.234.49

Very nice race Fritz. You looked very smooth early on. I think lost in all these great times, records, and PRs is the fact that yet again you PR-ed and beat your time from last year! Stellar race and comeback from your injury.

From Rachelle on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 09:04:48 from 159.212.71.199

Congratulations on yet another outstanding performance Fritz! You are such a strong runner and it was really fun to see you in your element Saturday. You looked so smooth and focussed.

Congrats on your race Fritz. Awesome to see you back and even stronger and faster!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 14:06:40 from 69.28.149.129

Fritz:

Congratulations on the PR! I think this race is something to be excited about. You lost a lot of training during the injury period. Then you gained the speed back with vengeance, but not quite the endurance to back it up - thus the slowdown at the end. But the exciting part is that the speed was there - speed is the difficult part. Endurance will come with training if you can stay healthy.

I am more excited to see you do 1:10:45/1:09:40 than I would have been to see 1:12:00/1:07:59. If you can get to through the first half of St. George in under 1:11 with the thought alone that you are going full 26, then second half in 1:06 will eventually come. But if you can only do 1:12 in the first half, we do not know - there is a good chance that maybe that is all you've got speed-wise.

From Fritz on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 15:21:07 from 71.35.254.106

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all of the kind words and your continued support.

@sasha- I am excited about this race for the exact reasons you mentioned. I do feel like I had the speed to run faster but the endurance was slightly lacking. Fortunately (and knock on wood), I think I have discovered the secret, not so secret, to preventing injuries so I should be able to ramp up my miles more than I have in the past.

@rachelle- thanks for cheering us on. It was a great distraction before that hill under the bridge.

@jake- if I didn't improve over PC I wouldn't have had to retire. CIM should be a great time.

@teena- somehow I missed you after the race amongst the 10k+ people. Go figure :) I am glad you were able to race and still run well.

@mike,scott,brandon,josh- thanks for helping me out during the build up. I can't wait to train with you guys again.

@steve,steveash,jpark,paul,spencer- thanks for the support. we wish you were all there.

From josse on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 17:19:30 from 70.208.3.96

Fritz you must share this secret:) great job on the race. It's so fun to see you come back so strong.

From Fritz on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 19:09:22 from 67.177.4.64

@josse- I have had chronic strength imbalances ever since I ruined my left knee in 2010. These imbalances have obviously caused bad form, over compensation and ultimately multiple injuries. So the secret, which of course isn't a secret, is to fix those imbalances. And my recipe for that, which doesn't require too much self motivation, has been Joe's bootcamp class. I am sure doing Insanity or Crossfit classes religiously would work as well :)

From josse on Mon, Oct 07, 2013 at 19:12:08 from 70.208.2.198

Fritz I have found that so true for me as well. All my HiiT training has helped me a ton.

From AmberG on Tue, Oct 08, 2013 at 08:32:15 from 199.66.116.216

Fritz- Congratulations on your race! You are a solid and strong competitor. I agree with you that we always learn something from each race-that we can take into our future training/races. Sounds like you know the 'secret', and you have the talent and determination to back it all up. Great things ahead for you...

From Andrea on Tue, Oct 08, 2013 at 09:43:52 from 72.37.171.52

Awesome race Fritz! So good to see you healthy and running well again. Sub-2:20 at CIM?!

Sub-2:18 at CIM I would say :)

Excellent race, Fritz! You tore it up! 2-teens is yours for the taking!
