Congrats to Aaron who ran a huge PR of 3 minutes and for breaking 2:20! Matt ran a great race (3 min PR!), Dave PR'd again (and fell at the finish again) and Clyde, Mike, Iain (steady as ever), Jon, Ben, Jacob (watch out for him in the future), Justin, Hille (3 min PR), and Collin (off the couch) all ran solid races.

As for me, I felt more prepared for this race than the past two years so I thought 2:18 was a stretch, but possible. And I thought sub 2:20 was very possible and anything above it would be disappointing.  Alas, disappointment.

2012 1:10:05 / 1:11:09 = 2:21:14

2013 1:10:45 / 1:09:40 = 2:20:25

2014 1:11:25 / 1:09:03 = 2:20:28

Looking at this it appears I ran a smarter race, which I probably did, but I just didn't have it in me to run sub 2:20. I put it all out there, so I am happy for that, but something was slightly off. I ran the downhills super well but any mile with a hill or flat I was working too hard. This explains my slower first half where there are more hills. I would surmise that I just wasn't in the best shape for a marathon. More miles probably would have served me well. I only got up to around 75 running miles a week which is less than usual, even for me who isn't a big miles guy, obviously.

To the race. The race got started 15 minutes late because the busses were delayed. I didn't mind because the sun came out sooner and I didn't think heat would be a factor. For the first three miles we were in a big pack (Iain, Jon, Jacob, Aaron, and Japanese runner). There were probably a bunch of others right on our heals but I didn't look back. At around mile four Aaron and I picked it up a bit and put a slight gap on the group. Aaron and I then ran together up Veyo and through the half way point. I noticed that my Veyo and mile 10 splits seemed slow (5:58,5:50) but I tried not to worry about it. I was holding back ever so slightly but I was still working more than I wanted. Not good. Fortunately my spirits were lifted at miles 15 and 16 where I ran two 4:57s. Crazy at it sounds that was the moment Aaron broke away and gapped me by about 20 seconds. He didn't have a watch to confirm but I know he ran those miles in around 4:45! From 16 on the theme was hammer the downhills and struggle on the uphills and flats....all the way to the finish. The wheels never really fell off but nothing felt smooth. My neck and upper body, more than anything else, never felt loose which probably cost me some energy. Should have hit the hot tub yesterday :)

Anyway, I don't want to sound like a complete debbie downer. I placed second, which is awesome, and I ran my best. I can't ask for more than that and I will take away a few lessons learned for the future. For one, we are already planning a Big Mountain/Emigration or Monte Cristo downhill dash to prep for next year.

Doing the same thing and expecting better results won't cut it!

Congratulations on the strong effort Fritz.

That last sentence is true. Breakthroughs in racing don't come without breakthroughs in training.

Well done SGM MR. Fritz.....

Nice job, Fritz. Not always a whole lot you can do when the other guy breaks away at near world record pace in the second half. I'm always amazed by your consistency, even if consistency wasn't really the goal today. You're smart and you know what you need to do, so I have no doubt that you'll crack that 2:20 barrier before long.

Great race Fritz, even if it was a hair shy of what you were expecting. It was good to see you at the start. I look forward to the downhill dash in 2015.

From Holt on Sat, Oct 04, 2014 at 17:37:20 from 67.2.255.210

It was more of a controlled stumble!

Way to go Fritz; you are always an inspiration. Nice catching up with you today.

Nice report Fritz. I love what we learn each race. Really does help for the next races. Sounds like it was a great day for many. Glad you are running so well as of lately. Great effort and finish. MIH

Way to go man. You inspire me race after race after race. No one on here besides maybe Paul P. Knows how to gear up for a race and pull it off like you. That's a talent in it's self. Props.

Congrats on a strong race, you looked good out there and ran well against great competition.

Awesome job fritz! You are due for a sub 2:20 soon! Always fun to see you really get after it up front!

From Tara on Sun, Oct 05, 2014 at 20:58:55 from 70.208.14.146

Sorry you didn't get the outcome you were hoping for. Your effort each year has been incredible, nonetheless. You're one of the best marathoners out there!!!!

From Rachelle on Mon, Oct 06, 2014 at 06:23:40 from 159.212.71.200

You are truly a marathon machine Fritz. Congrats on another great race. You absolutely will break 2:20 very soon. Most importantly I'm so glad you have had minimal injuries to deal with this year.

From Josh E on Mon, Oct 06, 2014 at 10:24:35 from 205.235.104.4

Incredible consistency Fritz. Everyone on this blog knows how hard it is to perform at your best and you always manage to land on top. I know I would have been thrilled to watch all those BYU jerseys come in after me!

From Matt Schreiber on Mon, Oct 06, 2014 at 15:15:15 from 66.17.102.175

Wow. Great race man. I like that bold statement you threw in at the end. Congrats on an awesome race!

From Hille on Tue, Oct 07, 2014 at 03:02:28 from 67.128.146.20

As always, you were impressive. So consistent. Good to talk to you for a second at the race.

From allie on Tue, Oct 07, 2014 at 16:54:23 from 24.30.41.119

gooood job, sir. again!

From Fritz on Tue, Oct 07, 2014 at 17:49:47 from 65.116.116.6

Thanks everyone. It was great to see so many of you out there to.

Rob, I think you said it best, "Breakthroughs in racing don't come without breakthroughs in training." I don't think I have ever made a big breakthrough in training.

Josh, In hindsight, I should be happier than I was initially for exactly that reason. At least the four of them looked really good in their post race pictures with the matching uniforms. :) (Matt P. especially)

From Matt Poulsen on Wed, Oct 08, 2014 at 20:59:34 from 50.168.224.197

Truly incredible, Fritz. Your consistency is unmatched. Nice race! I understand your frustration. I agree: I think your fitness is better than it's ever been. With some subtle tweaking of your training, you will be the one with a few minute PR.
