Today was the eighth time I have run this race (only missed 2005, 2006 and 2008) and every year I do it I like it more. The weather was perfect once again and the organization was flawless as usual.  I got off the bus at about 6:30 and then spent a much reduced time of 5 minutes tying my new blue shoes.  I jogged about a quarter mile past the start and then lined up.  Ben, Seth, Steve, and Paul were all there as well ready to go.  The gun went off and I soon found myself all alone.  I didn’t really think I was going to fast so I just didn’t look back and kept going.  I went through the first 5k as planned (slower than the Fritz 5k time of 16:19 from last Saturday) but 4 seconds faster than my 5k split from last year. I was feeling just ok at this point but once I hit the flats I my stride started to smooth out.  The rollers at mile 9 and 11 through 13 slowed me down but I didn’t want to push it too much and I knew that I had banked some good splits in the early miles. I went through the half in just under 1:11 which was about 20 seconds faster than last year; fortunately I don’t think I had to work as hard to hit that time. This is where my buddy bike pacer Corbin from last year picked me up and I told me that it was his job to make my second split faster than last year.  It felt doable at that point but how much better was TBD.  The 14 mile split up the hill was 9 seconds faster than last year which was a good sign until I hit the peak. My quads felt trashed. It took about .5 miles to get the lactate acid out of the quads but I guess that could have been worse.  At this point I kept hearing cheers behind so I thought someone was gaining on me. I didn’t dare to look back nor did I ask Corbin so I guess I will never know if someone was there.  I just kept motoring on around the damn and then tried to push the down hills as much as possible.  Maybe I got a little carried away because mile18 was a 5:09 compared to a 5:19 last year.  At this point I hadn’t had a gel in about 5 miles so that became the most pressing concern.  Fortunately the aid station had mile 20 had one but I executed the grab terribly and had to stop to turn around to get it.  Then once I grabbed it my new blue shoe traction failed me and I slipped to my hands.  No real damage done, except for losing exactly 9 seconds J (stay tuned for why that matters). The next miles felt good and I was doing my best to hold back something for the last few miles.  Unfortunately I hit mile 23 and suddenly my right hamstring got really tight.  A strained or torn hamstring was the last thing I needed at this point but there was really nothing I could do but keep going.  I slowed quite a bit as my splits would show, mostly as result of the flattened terrain, fatigue and to a lesser extent the hamstring.  My biggest mistake at this point was not looking at my watch because I really had no idea at that point how close I was to coming in under 2:23 and rivaling Seth’s course record of 2:22:51.  I pushed the last mile as much as could and then as I approached the finish saw the big clocking ticking 2:22:55,56, 57….Bummer!  I pushed through the line and saw 2:22:58 on the clock and later the announcer said my official time was 2:22:59 (exactly 8 seconds off the CR).  RunRaceResults shows 2:23:00….which is el wrongo :)

Although it wasn’t flawless I am still very happy with the 2 minute improvement over last years’ time and the 30 second PR.  Of course it would have been cool to also get the CR but I guess that will just have to be a goal for next year.

After the race I ran into Scott, who put up a big PR in half, Seth (2nd in marathon),  Bryant (1st in half), Riley (2nd in half), Chad (big PR in marathon), RAD (huge PR in marathon despite the bum knee), Rossy (close to PR I think) and marathon man Steve (4th overall and master’s #1). Once again Ogden put on a great event and I can’t wait to do it all over again next year.

Congrats on another victory and a great race. Hope the hammy isn't too troublesome.

You dominate that course Fritz! Congratulations on another big win.

Hope that hammy behaves. And slipping to your hands probably wasn't fun at all, but WAY TO RUN! Holy crow, your marathon times are so friggin amazing! I am so awe inspired by you every time!

Wow, Fritz, Mr. Consistency. Congrats on a win and almost CR.

It was so cool to see you so far ahead and still pushing it. I would have loved to see you get that course record--you definitely deserved it today. Besides being a freaking amazing runner, you're a class-act guy!

2:22 is absolutely amazing!

P.S. Have fun on your date tonight :-)

From Jake K on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 18:58:22 from 67.182.215.126

Awesome run Fritz. You are stepping it up to a new level almost every race - you're at a new level now. Running 2:22 solo is no easy task. I think you'll be knocking on the 2:20 door before you know it. Its just going to take the right race and actually having someone to run with! :-)

Now the question is, can you round out the weekend and bowl a 200+? That would put you in my distance running hall of fame.

From RileyCook on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 20:02:05 from 65.130.70.180

Fritz, your consistency amazes me. You are an extremely strong runner. Awesome race today. Three years in a row is quite the feat. Now you just need to go get that course record next year. Great job, see you at UVM.

Way to race Fritz! That's a beast of a time running solo. Well deserved win!

congrats, fritz. you are a pro at the SLC/ogden combo. way to own this race yet again!

From Smooth on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 21:34:27 from 174.27.212.157

Saw you blazing thru the dam with a huge lead, the cheer could've been for the last of the half marathoners as the Sargent in charge told me the traffic cope escorted you, the leader and a motorcade brought in the rear of the half marathoners who were walking.

Then I cheered you like a mad woman at the finish. Your stride and form was as smooth strong and fluid as in mile 17 with an extra awesome kick! Would've been sweet to get that CR and you clearly could've gotten it...there's always next time! CONGRATZ on another victory!!! Awesome performance this morning! :)

From Teena Marie on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 21:37:29 from 174.255.132.175

Stud! Why didn't you take the spill yesterday off of the already moving treadmill upon ascent? You know that works for you! Totally bummed that I didn't have enough time to wish all you guys luck this year (obviously nothing you needed though)! Stupid POP lines! Anyway, a HUGE congrats! Stud!

From MarkP on Sat, May 19, 2012 at 21:52:56 from 75.162.247.151

Fritz - Sweet race. Great victory! I almost said hi to you right before the start, but you and your blue shoes are very intimidating and you looked zoned in.. Great job again!

From jtshad on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 07:43:10 from 69.20.183.178

From Steve on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 08:17:40 from 66.87.66.46

I was surprised at your start yesterday. You were just ahead of me for the first 5k and I kept thinking what's he up too? Not your usual fast one...Really smart race. I was surprised at miles 18 and 19 too. Did you like the course change?

From Ben VanBeekum on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 10:14:19 from 67.169.246.46

Fritz congratulations again on another win at the Ogden!! Your an amazing runner and you make it look so easy. I respect how you went after it yesterday, that is way gutsy to go out in the lead like that. Wish you the best of luck in all your future racers. Congrats again on your 1st place finish!!

From Fritz on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 13:50:29 from 173.10.22.170

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all the nice words of encouragement.

@Dan- Fortunately I don't think the hammy is too serious. A week of rolling, the hot tub jet and exercises and I should be good to go. Nothing I haven't dealt with before. I hope your hip gets better too.

@Rob- Thanks. I have had my fair share of blow ups on this course too. Getting a bit smarter with age I guess.

@Lily- Thanks. The slip probably woke me up from the 20 mile fog so maybe it was a good thing :)

@Jon. Thanks. I think they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. :) Maybe next year.

@Scott- Thanks for your support. You are a great guy. Oh, and no date comments allowed on FRB ;)

@Jake- I would like to think I would run faster with people but I also run the risk of going out too fast like CIM. Then again, I went out with the wrong group. The 200 barrier will be tough but not out of the question.

@Riley- Thanks. Once you get a couple marathons under your belt you will be putting up some amazing times.

@Allie- Thanks. We missed your aid station support in the canyon. I have found that 4 weeks is just enough between marathons. Too bad UVM is only 3 away.

@Smooth- Thanks for the loud cheers. I think convincing myself that 2nd place was right behind me helped.

@Teena- We missed you at the start. Glad you were only stuck at the POP. I consciously remembered NOT to jump on a moving treadmill this year. While that was fun and probably more funny to watch, I didn't need the road burn. Congrats on an awesome race!

@Oreo- I didn't realize my blue shoes were intimidating. I thought they were a happy color. Next time we will have to chat.

@Steve and Ben - Thanks guys and congrats to both of your races. So one of you thinks I went out too slow and one thinks I went too fast. Must have been just right... I did like the subtle change because at that point in the race weaving around people is exhausting.

@Steveash- Thanks Steve. We are all waiting in anticipation for you resurgence to the tour.

From JPark on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 14:18:44 from 174.52.34.169

Congratulations Fritz! You're inspiring, so solid and consistent.

From SlowJoe on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 17:00:50 from 69.131.141.92

Wow! Congrats on the win. I can't imagine the momentum that must have been sucked out of you after a fall like that. More than 9 seconds when you factor in that inertia. Congrats on the PR, and great performance.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 18:19:39 from 207.224.194.188

congrats on another big win. too bad a bout those 9 seconds. you will get the record next year!

From Superfly on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 18:25:47 from 74.211.21.81

Great race! Your consistent improvement is almost mythical and to be envied:) Sucks about the dropped gu and fall down. Could have cost more than 9 seconds with it slowing you down and having to get the legs going again.

From Toby on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 20:16:16 from 199.101.229.6

What an impressive race! You make it sound so effortless! I really like how you had the elevation change for each mile split - how did you do that? It helps me analyze my own race. Way to go!

From Chad Robinson on Sun, May 20, 2012 at 22:35:56 from 65.130.117.26

Phenomenal job Fritz! It was fun chatting with you before and after. Ogden did a wonderful job this year (now if the could shave down that hill at mile 23 I would be really happy). The course record will be going down next year.

From RAD on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 00:15:52 from 98.202.23.178

Excellent work out there Fritz! I love how you take on the course and throw it down. I guess Ogden organizers knew you'd need a goal to come back for next year, so they paid their volunteer to drop the GU so you'd lose those 9 seconds and have to come back. It is all a conspiracy! Either way, I'm always SO impressed with you and how despite being such a 'big wig' in the running community you don't mind listening to my mindless drivel :)

CONGRATS on taking home the big check today, and having that goal to come back for next year. I hope the lawn mowing went well - and that you live on a tenth of an acre or less, OR that you have a riding lawn mower :)

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 12:03:07 from 67.222.225.187

Congratulations on the win and the PR!

Now the question is how to find improvement from this point. Your ability to hold the half speed over the full marathon is of world-class quality already. It would be difficult to improve it. However, the half speed can be improved, I think, and it is really not quite the half speed we are talking about, it is really all out mile speed. You probably race the half maybe 15 seconds per mile slower than an all out mile. So what I would do is find the breaking point. Do time trials in 100, 200, 400, 800 and the mile. The rough line I am expecting to see in the more or less optimized Fritz is 14.0, 28.0, 58.0, 2:04 and 4:28. It will be a good idea to race Jake in those, it is very hard to run an all out middle distance alone especially if you do not have middle distance background. If you cannot crack 14 in 100, the training should be hill sprints. Otherwise it is some middle distance work to remove the fear of fast pace. Once you can run a mile in 4:28, the 5 K can dip under 15:00, with that about 30:30 in 10 K, and 1:06 in the half. With the world-class marathon endurance that is already there and is likely not going away we are looking at about 2:17 marathon.

From Fritz on Mon, May 21, 2012 at 23:14:02 from 67.182.226.25

@RAD- I can't blame it on the volunteer this time. :) I had been looking for a GU for 4 aid stations and then I got to the aid station that had one and I completely missed the grab. DOH! I often miss cups too so maybe I should get my eyes checked...hmmm. Your race was much more interesting than mine. Just a big bummer that the knee acted up at the end. Next time, right? Fortunately I had some help with the lawn so I just did the trimming and blowing. I appreciate the concern. :)

@Sasha- Thanks for the words of encouragement, the vote of confidence and the great advice. I think you are spot with what I need to do to improve. I will just need to get over my fear of the track and start with doing one split for Jake's two. I hope to see you at race or two this summer.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 22, 2012 at 12:17:45 from 67.222.225.187

Fritz - where you live track is probably the best option as long as you are able to handle the curves without being injured. I cannot, for example, so all of my speed work except for very occasional time trials are done on the road. If I lived in your area and moving to Provo/Orem was not an option, I would just wheel out a portion of the Emigration canyon and mark it every 100 meters. GPS errors can maybe with some stretch dealt with for a 5 mile tempo run, but for middle distance work a GPS is absolutely and completely useless. The error of as little as 5 seconds per mile is astronomical for such purposes.

Let me know how those time trials go once you recover.

From Holt on Tue, May 22, 2012 at 15:55:49 from 204.113.55.41

Great job Fritz - you are blasting everything now-a-days!
