Internet access is hard to come by so I will have to keep this brief.  Race went ok I suppose considering the course, weather, hamstring, and basic laziness since SGM. Finished 8th overall with a 1:12:46 and with that I won a bag of potatoes. The marathoners had be miserable because there was a downpour for the entire race and about 45 degrees.  The winner of the half ran an amazing time for the course (1:07:00) and he walked away with not only potatoes, but rice and onions. Lucky guy. Iain Hunter also ran a great race and finished 5th in a 1:10:45. Amber Green finished second in the women's race in ~1:25.  My time would have put me in the top 3 or at least the top 5 for most years so I guess the competition was a bit tougher this year. I started off with a pack of 5 but they dropped me slowly as we started up the canyon.  Iain passed me shortly thereafter and for the rest of the race and battled with a couple of young guys on a local team.  I ended up beating one but the other guy who was only 18 out kicked me at the finish. More memorable than the race was the pre race festivities which included calisthenics and food vendors serving steak and fish on a stick, sausages and brats, ramen soup, and my favorites, bread with whip cream and bananas. Amazingly I saw several of the runners eating the fish and steak skewers...which makes me wonder how they felt at mile 13. Overall Japan has been a great experience.  The culture is very different than ours in many ways, although you can sense that western culture, for better or for worse, has influenced the economy and younger generations of late.

These were the bento boxes available before the race.  The thought of eating fried prawns before a race didn't sound appealing to me.

Wow! What an experience Fritz. Thanks for sharing the photos. Great time and finish, as always. :)

Very nice Fritz as always and a great showing for Utah.

Love Japanese food but I'm with you on that one.. I would of grabbed a couple of Bento boxes and hid them until after.

What a cool experience. It'll be fun to hear more about it. Nice job on a cold, rainy day.

Sounds like it was all that and a bag of.... potatoes. :). Very cool. Glad you enjoyed the experience, that's a great time considering the marathon wasn't that long ago, the travel, and the time difference. Good call on not eating the fish before the race, those burps would have tasted yummy.

Forget gels, just go w/ those pre-race (and maybe even mid-race?) meat skewers from now on. Paleo! :-)

Looking forward to an insanely easy run and hearing more about the trip.

Nicely done Fritz! Sounds like a great experience to have been able to go over there and experience that.

Really sounds like an exciting experience. Great job under less than favorable conditions.

Nice showing in the race. I was looking forward to hearing how it went for ya. Sounds like a good time, despite wet conditions.

What an awesome experience Fritz! Great running and I hope you enjoyed the trip.

Solid time on a harder course plus all the other *'s too. Take a little RandR and come into 2013 fully healthy. It could be an even better year for you than 2012... and that would be hard to beat.

From Tara on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 12:31:25 from 75.169.137.173

Very nice! I bet the thought of loosing out on onions and rice was a tough one to swallow on the way home. Guess you'll have to spend 10 bucks and pick some up from Walmart.:) Great job!

very cool, fritz. sounds like you had a fun trip.

From Smooth on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 18:36:45 from 67.2.119.62

What a neat experience! Did you take some bento box for after the race? I love those bentos! Happy travel and R&R! :)

From Fritz on Thu, Nov 15, 2012 at 20:38:50 from 67.177.4.64

Thanks everyone. I just added some more pics of the pre-race sake, beer, skewers and calisthenics.

@Tara- I knew the winner would get rice but had I known he would also get onions I would have run much faster. Actually it's my host family who misses out because it would have never shipped 100 lbs of veggies home.

@smooth- we did take several bento boxes and some very tasty whip cream/banana/bread sandwiches. I think they would be super popular, amongst non-runners, if they sold them here.

I'm a little late to the party... I'll echo what everyone else has said: What an amazing experience and great race all things considered.
