Today has been an interesting day. Barely made it to the start line on time even though I left my house at 5:30 (race started at 8), passed a Buffalo and Antelope on the course (go figure), ran the first half in 1:46:30 which I think is the 25k course record (probably doesn’t mean much), took two wrong turns on the course, BLEW up at about mile 26 (second half was 12 minutes slower than the first), earned two large blisters on my feet, and I walked up the hill to the finish which might have been a 3 percent grade.  Despite all of that I did win the race by ~6 minutes and now I have a spiffy statue of a Buffalo.

Prerace Recap-

Left my house promptly at 5:30 just to make sure I had plenty of time to get my bid and to get acquainted to island.  Arrived at the gate to the cosway at 6:30 where I was supposed to find a parking lot with my bid.  I didn’t see the first parking (this is what I get for leaving early in the dark) and pulled into the second only to find nobody there.  Stupidly I continued on and 20 minutes later I entered the finisher’s tent only to find out that I had passed my bid and had to go back.  Fortunately I ran into a doctor, a smart person who also made the same mistake, in the parking lot and hitched a ride with him (thanks Dave). We got back to the parking lot with the bids by 7:10, waited in line for 15 minutes and made it back to the starting area by 7:45.  Plenty of time, right?  At 7:52 I got up to the start line and noticed a few little orange things on people’s shoes.  Hmmmm….are those chips?  “I wonder why I didn’t get one.”   Oh yeah, they gave me a big white bag with a bunch of junk in it and…..raced back to the car at sub 6 pace, found the chip, raced back to the start line at sub 5:30 pace  and made it with 2 minutes to spare.  Now for the shoelace check.  Left shoe good, right shoe too loose.   Tried to untie the knot but couldn’t do it before the race started.  Spent the first mile obsessing over my loose shoe but fortunately a hill at mile two caught my attention and I didn’t think about the shoelace again.  This is probably the longest I have ever written about a prerace mishap but I wanted to get it on paper to see if it will help prevent reliving this in a nightmare.

Race Recap-

Went out a bit too fast because I was worried that my loose shoe would slow.  Partly kidding but there is probably some truth to it.  Put some distance on everyone except two guys who were sticking within 100 yards or so.  One of those guys dropped back after mile 2 and then spent the next 8 miles or so going back and forth with a guy named Brad who ran for Cornell and Boise St.  I dropped him on the switchbacks at mile 9 but he stayed within sight all the way through the half turnaround.  Finished feeling good going through the first half in 1:46:30 but already knew that it wouldn’t be able to even split.  So then the questions became: how much time will I lose on the second loop and can Brad catch up?  At the turnaround (mile 16.25????) I took my third GU and managed to get down two tiny cups of water and Sprite.  I didn’t carry a water bottle and because it was heating up I think dehydration was probably already setting in.  I managed to hold a decent pace for the first climb but I had to resort to hiking on the super steep climb at mile 22 (8:39 mile) because my quads were nearing their end.  That hike just about did them in and my splits compared to the first started to suffer (see below).  From there I was still able to run the downhills fairly fast but anything with an incline was slow and painful.   I did my best to maintain some resemblance of moving until I reached the top of the switchbacks and then I tried to let gravity do the work until I hit the next steep incline at mile 29.  By that point my quads had nothing left so I speed hiked about half of a mile (9:18) split until I reached the peak.  After that I was sure someone would be gaining on my but there was still no one in sight.  It was a sufferfest for the last 3 miles and shameful for the last .25 because I hiked/walked up an incline that my 90 year old grandma (birthday is tomorrow) could easily handle herself.  BUT, I did run through the finish!  My garmin said 32.65…I could have gone without the extra 1.65.

All said, I am happy that I stuck it out and winning is always nice.  Would have been better to run strong on the second half but oh well.  In hindsight, I think I underestimated the hills on the course (not flat) and pushed them too hard in the first half.  I also know my electrolytes and dehydration were an issue because I had lots of salt on my face and arms after the race.

Post race was spent chatting with Brad from Boise, Lulu Walls (best volunteer at the race hands down), Jun, Smooth, Dan V. (2nd 25k), Albert (winner 25k), another FRB’er and her friend (sorry I can’t remember names) and waiting for the 25k folks to get their massages. :) Fun time!

I got a few blisters, lost a toe nail and won a buffalo

Great job! You're a beast out there! Nice win...

From RAD on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 17:53:57 from 98.202.23.178

It was me :) I was the other FRBer! It was great to see you fly by in the lead as you headed out for your second loop (mile 4ish on the loop). You are an amazing runner!! Congrats on an awesome race and the Buffalo statue. I could've done without the extra mileage too, and it makes me feel a lot better that you had a rough time with that last uphill to the finish too. In fact, most of your 2nd loop I could relate to, but I only had the ONE to do! Awe!!

From Smooth on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 18:08:07 from 174.27.212.157

CONGRATULATIONS Fritz! Seriously the sight of you blazing passed me twice was the most exciting part of my day!!!! :) AWESOME JOB!!! Your pre-race mishaps are too funny...like the treadmill biff the day before winning Ogden and of course today's...made me laugh so hard! Seriously though...none of that mishaps effected your championship quality! WAY to win, CHAMP!!!

Oh, yeah, thanks for humbly adding the last incline walk...makes me feel much better about my walk...knowing a champ did it too! :) YOU ARE AWESOME!!!! :)

That is such a cool race!

Way to tough out a win, Fritz.

From Jake K on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 19:44:02 from 67.177.21.60

Congrats on your first race - eventually you'll figure out all those pre-race logistics... oh wait, you're a veteran of ~40 marathons? :-) haha quite the comedy of errors before the race even started!

Its a tough course, especially when you are running solo the entire time, and it was deceptively warm today. I thought of you when I finished my workout today and my body was covered in a salt film. I was glad I wasn't running 50K today!

I bet your 26 mile split was quite a bit faster than mine was last year. Luckily it was colder last year so it was easier to get away w/out drinking much. Sounds like they added on some extra bonus distance too. I think you should get a refund on your entry fee for that... maybe $5 for every tenth of a mile the race is long. I guess thats the deal w/ trail races though... they are accurate to +/- 10% :-)

Congrats on the buffalo statue. Its pretty sweet, huh? Andrea hates ours.

Hahaha, way to go Mr Humble. You didn't say anything about winning today. All you said was that you blew up. Sorry if I seemed out of it today, my kids were driving me crazy.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 21:36:37 from 76.27.122.13

You're an inspiration Fritz.

Take care of yourself the next few days ok? I'll leave the roller on my front porch tomorrow in case you come by for it and we aren't home.

From gdoc on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 21:44:05 from 98.202.193.212

Nice job...it was fun to see you whizz by me coming the other way! Focused and Fast.

SW33T!!!! :) :) :)

Seriously ... incredible!!!!

How are you feeling now? Hips? Knees? IT bands?

I am so in awe!!

Long live the Buffalo King!!! Salty face and all!!! :)

From Lulu Walls on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 12:53:49 from 166.70.240.95

Way to kill it on the trails yesterday! I don't know which is more frightening the buffalo or your toenail :)

From JPark on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 13:58:19 from 174.52.34.169

Wow, great race and congrats on the win! You are amazing. It sounds like a brutal race. That blister is nasty!

From Fritz on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 14:02:52 from 75.220.211.214

Thanks everyone.

Smooth/Rad - nice to meet both of you and I am glad you appreciated my hike to the finish. It would have been unoriginal to run, right? :)

Jake - I like the idea of a refund for extra mileage. If I wanted to run more I would have signed up for the 50 miler. :) I can't believe Andrea doesn't like the Buffalo. Once you get a few animal furs on the wall it will fit right in.

Jun - I didn't feel like I won yesterday. The course was the winner.

Teena - I am still assessing the damage but I think I came out ok. The hip got super tired on the uphills, which was frustrating, but felt fine going down. Luckily I still have one tough leg.

Lulu - Buffalos are bigger than toe nails and this toe nail isn't alive.

You were looking very strong as you cruised by us at the aid stations. I didn't realize that an FRB'er was winning as you passed me by. Of course, I was too busy trying to stay vertical from running the 50K the night before in order to run the aid station.

From Jake K on Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 18:30:13 from 67.177.21.60

cool buffalo. gross toenail.

congrats, fritz.

happy birthday to your grandmother.

From Rob on Mon, Mar 26, 2012 at 08:38:02 from 206.71.84.68

I'm jealous. It looks like a lot of fun. The salt on your face could be from Dehydration! Or the fact that your on an island surrounded by the saltiest body of water in the world.

From Andrea on Mon, Mar 26, 2012 at 09:38:50 from 201.54.233.42

#1 thank goodness I don't have to deal with another Buffalo Trophy.

#2 Nice race. I can't believe it was so long - probably the one thing I really dislike about trail races.

#3 Great job out there! It is NOT an easy route - those hills are killer.

So you think you would run it again??

From scottkeate on Mon, Mar 26, 2012 at 10:17:13 from 216.49.181.254

Nice work! An impressive performance working through dehydration and a chaotic pre-race routine. Congrats!

From Fritz on Mon, Mar 26, 2012 at 16:06:08 from 65.116.116.6

Thanks for the photo Jake.

I am almost certain I will run it again. I liked the course and I think with a few tweaks to my preparation and race execution (pre and during) I could do a little better.

From Superfly on Fri, Mar 30, 2012 at 10:14:21 from 74.211.21.81

Solid race on a longish distance. But if I were to run another ultra type race I'd do this one too. The course seems a little more runnable then some.

Good job on another win for the year. Are you doing SLC full or half?
