Road up Big Mountain instead of BC or LC because I figured it would be a bit warmer.  I flew up Emigration because I had a huge tailwind which meant coming down I would get the wind in my face.  A guy passed me as I was descending Little Mountain so I latched onto to him and we traded off breaking the wind until we got to the zoo.  Perfect day for a ride.  I love the greenery.

perfect day to get up high.

sorry the hammy is still being a nuisance... i hope you start to feel better.

Rob M and I decided on the run this morning that we should have a long weekend training camp up in yellowstone. If only we knew someone with access to a cabin and who knew the dirt roads around there really well... :-)

Yeah, if only we knew someone....

That would be fun. The cabin is used a lot in July and August but I might be able to find an open weekend

I put an orange peg on the cabin so you can see where it is situated. There is a nicely graded 17 mile dirt road that connects you to the 20 freeway. From there it is another 6 miles to West Yellowstone which is the west entrance to Yellowstone. In a car it takes between 30 and 45 mins to get to the entrance. Ivan Ironman Stewart could do it in 20 mins. I often just do out and backs on the dirt road or I go up firetrails if I want more hills.

Pictures of the cabin are on FB. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10100113419662893.2679604.1237972&type=3

That's a great location. Luckily you aren't meaty enough to be good bear food :-) That's the only thing that would scare me about running solo up that way.

From Fritz on Mon, May 28, 2012 at 14:26:43 from 65.100.192.74

That has been a concern in recent years which is why I have started to run less on the firetrails and more on the dirt road. My brother is such a wuss that he bought a big handgun to carry on hikes. Despite the increased sitings I have yet to run into a bear but I have run into several moose. My intimidating stature typically scares them away.

hopefully this link will work - but this is a picture of one of my former roommates from colorado, while he was mtn biking in alaska last summer:

Nice! I guess I would feel safer packing some heat plus the extra weight would strengthen my arms.

We just don't want to end up like this

Keeping in mind that was just the first incident since 1986 and I suspect we can move faster than a 57 year old.

If the world ever wants to know who is faster, Jake or Fritz just put a bear behind them.

From Rob Murphy on Mon, May 28, 2012 at 14:58:11 from 24.10.249.165

Exactly Rob. My money would be on Jake and Fritz. Plus, as the bear was chasing the two of them he would quickly observe that he would burn more calories in the pursuit than he would regain by consuming them. A simple cost-benefit analysis would lead the bear to conclude that it wasn't worth it.
