I haven't run since last Saturday (tried but failed on Wed.) so I figured if there was any chance I could still run St. George I better start testing the hamstring.  Warmed up 2 miles on the elliptical then anxiously jumped on the treadmill.  Started super slow but eased into a 7 min pace and finished a little over 10 miles in 70 mins.  Fortunately I didn't feel any sharp pains throughout the run and the hamstring didn't feel much different at the end than it did at the start.  My legs did feel heavy after the run but always seems to be the case after taking several days off.

If I was healthy today I would have raced a half marathon and tacked on another 6.  That is a typical Saturday two weeks out from a marathon. But since I couldn't do that, I am tentatively planning a long run tomorrow, maybe up Emigration, to see how the hamstring holds up.  If I can come away from that unscathed, get in some decent miles this week and run a 5k next weekend, I will feel much better about giving St. George a go.  We'll see.

Too bad you couldn't. Walter needed someone to beat him.

Glad the test run went well. I hope all is perfect for tomorrow! SGM just wouldn't be the same without you :)

My vote would be to just take the pressure off for running St. George, try to get the hamstring 100% and be able to have a great training cycle for CIM or another late marathon. Just my two cents and obviously I am in super-conservative mode of thinking right now. I would hate to see this injury get to the point where you couldn't run at all.

Thanks RAD and Andrea for the words of wisdom. I always tell myself, "I just need to get through this race then I will fix my problems" but obviously I never get them completely fixed and I go into the next race thinking the same thing. I am just a very inpatient person and when I am able to run at all I figure I should be racing. I can't even comprehend what it would be like to race after an 8 week training cycle without any injuries. :)

What I will do is go into tomorrow's run with no expectations. If I run 20 that's great but if my body only wants to go 10 that will be good enough. I guess this means I better do laps at SHP instead so I don't get 10 miles up the canyon and have to run home.

I am glad to hear you were able to run today Fritz. I think Andrea gave you some great advice. I'm likely the most impatient runner on the blog so I definitely have nothing to add.

Good luck with your run tomorrow.

Good run today and best of luck tomorrow. Part of me (the prudent side) feels the same way as Andrea, but the other (selfish) side of me really wants to see you there throwing the smack down and giving us novices a free lesson on marathon racing. I totally understand (and also have) the impatient runner's syndrome. I know you'll make the right decision about what to do and I totally support you either way...But I hope its that you feel great tomorrow and over course of the next two weeks and can join the party down there!
