Happy 4th of July! The 19th annual Sawtelle Stampede was run today and I think this was my 13th time running it. This year I didn't get to run the kids 1k with my nephews because they started the half marathon before the other races. Turns out that Thomas stopped for two cups of water at the turn around so he didn't place as well as last year. He and Nicolai still finished strong and in the top 10. My race was uneventful from the start but I still tried to run semi fast and the course always takes a good effort. My time was 4 minutes slower than last year which wasn't totally surprising. I finally had my blood work done and it's no good. 38 hematocrit, 270 testosterone and 15 ferritin. This could partially explain my subpar races of late, in addition to my lack of training. Hopefully getting those numbers up will help.

15 ferretin? Woah. I bet that does explain a lot. That is really low. Easy fix though if you are consistent on the iron supplementation.

Almost ALL endurance athletes need to take regular iron supplements.

Nice job racing though. That looks like a beautiful race. I'd love to run it someday.

The only levels I was familiar with was hematocrit, and you were on the very low end of normal. I looked up the other two and you are on the very low ends of normal on those too. For a high level athlete like yourself, that has to take its toll. I'm sure you knew that from getting your results, but your ferritin and hematocrit will rise drastically with some iron supplementation, which I'm sure you're doing. What do you do about the lower testosterone though? Too bad you don't have Alberto Salazar as your coach/personal masseuse… he could help you out with some androgel like he does for Galen!

I recall seeing a Japanese study that showed garlic combined with lard can serve as a testosterone booster. I have tried garlic with turkey lunch meet + naps, and had decent results - no blood test to prove it, but I could tell in the workouts and other things that there was a positive contribution. Another thing that will not make you fail a drug test you can try is Maral root. Maral deer dig those roots out during mating season after they are done fighting for the females to recover for the next fight. Studies show it works on humans as well, and improves more than testosterone.

For iron, Benjamin and I do this - breakfast - rolled oats (uncooked), soy milk, raisins and/or dates, two kinds of berries, mixed nuts, mix it all up, it is actually edible and tastes quite good. We do not use a blender, but I suppose you could. About 1000 calories, so this is actually a decent size meal.

Another thing for testosterone - have a girl that interests you watch you run.

Thanks for the tips. I think I would have to use a blender for that iron rich concoction.

Ever since my health issues in 2007/2008 my hematocrit has hovered around 40 to 42 and my ferritin around 25. So while they are lower than usual I think iron supplements can get them back into the normal range. I am not, however, exactly sure how to treat the low testosterone. I don't want to be the youngest guy attending those low "T" treatment centers. :)
